Now I am visiting a museum in the upper levels of the Gyeongju Tower. This is a reproduction of a frieze discovered in Samarkand in Central Asia. The two far right men, based on their dress, are visiting Silla traders. This is evidence that Silla traded actively with many nations - not merely those within Korea or in neighboring China and Japan, but also with nations much farther away along the Silk Road and beyond. In fact, there had been a special exhibition at the National Museum, where I could not take photographs, where I could learn a bit more about Silla's trade relations with faraway nations; Silla had learned glassmaking from the Middle East, and had even hosted a resident community of Middle Eastern Muslims. |
