Description

THE ARRIVAL OF THE CANADIAN CONTINGENT AT CAPE TOWN.

It was at the end of October, 1899, that the Canadian contingent under Colonel Otter set out for South Africa. It was a battalion of one thousand and forty-nine officers and men, with an excellently equipped ambulance. Every pan of the Dominion had contributed to it. In most of the companies, it is interesting to note that the prevailing language was French, and it has been recorded that, at Paardeberg. where the Canadians distinguished themselves most, many of them were heard to cry, as they charged the enemy's kopjes, " Vive la Reine." In December, Colonel Otter's force was supplemented by a battalion of mounted infantry and three batteries of artillery.
