Deutsch: Das Wappen wurde am 19. Dezember 1968 vom Hessischen Ministerium des Innern genehmigt. Das Wappen ist abgeleitet von Siegeln aus den 13. und 14. Jahrhundert, welche bereits Löwen zeigten. Die Darstellung des über drei Felsspitzen schreitenden bunten Löwen im Siegel des 14. Jahrhunderts verursachte das durch die zeitgenössische naturwissenschaftliche Literatur bestärkte Missverständnis, es handele sich um mehrere Löwen. Zuerst sind es drei und seit dem Siegel von 1639 nur noch zwei junge Löwen. Diese Darstellung übernahmen auch die Wappenbücher und schließlich auch Otto Hupp, da die Stadt sie selbst anerkennt. Ab 1505 wurde auch ein Wappen mit drei Kleeblättern gezeigt, welches als „echtes Wappen“ bezeichnet wird. |
