Summary
[edit]| Description | The CWS erected this monument in Rochdale cemetery to their former director and chairman John Mitchell (1828 - 1895). As a boy he worked in a cotton mill but later became a warehouseman and joined the Rochdale Pioneers in 1853. As president of the Co-operative Wholesale Society he oversaw the development of the company as it expanded from its small local base in Lancashire ,to become a manufacturer in its own right with worldwide connections. On the side of the monument is inscribed part of Mr Mitchell's inaugural address to the Co-operative Congress held in Rochdale in 1892, which reads, 'The three great forces for the improvement of mankind are religion, temperance and co-operation, and, as a commercial force, supported and sustained by the other two, co-operation is the grandest, noblest and the most likely to be successful in the redemption of the industrial classes'. |
