Summary
[edit]DescriptionLighthouse monument - geograph.org.uk - 267810.jpg |
English: Lighthouse monument There was originally a light on Clear Island, but on a day such as this, it was hidden in cloud. Unfortunately one claggy night in 1847, the Stephen Whitney navigated into Roaringwater Bay in the mistaken belief that it was Cork Harbour. The navigators could see Rock Island light, but not Clear. This confirmed to them that they had passed Old Head of Kinsale, and the ship hit one of the Calf Islands with great loss of life.
As a result a lighthouse nearer sealevel was built on the Fastnet Rock. The stone here is at good view point for the Fastnet and Clear lighthouses. Of course today it was impossible to see either. |
