| Description |
English: This scroll fragment is made of a sheet of fine yellow paper to which a small blank piece of paper (the only extant portion of what would have been the protective flap) is still attached.
On the verso, text is regularly written in vertical lines of about 17 characters each that are laid within margins and guidelines. On line 1, the title 妙法蓮華經安樂行品第十四 (Miao fa lian hua jing an le xing pin di shi si) indicates that the manuscript contains part of Chapter 14 of the Lotus Sutra's translation in Chinese by Kumarajiva. The text ends at "不獨他家。若【。。。】 (bu du ta jia. Ruo)". This would have been part of the fifth juan卷五 (juan wu)of the scripture. The verso is blank, except for the number 'S.1058' and the incription 妙法蓮華經安樂行品第十四 - 卷五 and the Suzhou numeral 170, both written in red ink. These are 20th-century additions, made after the manuscript was removed from Mogao Cave 17, near Dunhuang, China. This scroll was conserved and digitised as part of the Lotus Sutra Manuscripts Digitisation Project, generously sponsored by the Bei Shan Tang Foundation. |
