Emblem of the Romanian SS Unit

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Emblem of the Romanian SS Unit
  • Note: The historical references for the design of these collar tabs are somewhat unclear. The drawing was created by a contributor on Wikimedia Commons without providing the historical sources.
    • collector's comment on warrelics.eu: this 'Romanian' collar tab does not appear on the 'February 1945 SS map', see 'Foreign Legions of the Third Reich' by David Littlejohn volume 4 page 106, where the shown insignia for Romanian volunteers is the Iron Guard cross surrounded with oakwreath and two crossed daggers, but it appeared in 'Siegrunen' N°42 page 34 in this design: Archangel Michael cross on a circle with two spears, but as usual without source or reference...
    • SchutzStaffel (SS) Collar Tab and Shoulder Board Identification Guide at germandaggers.com: Waffen-SS Collar Tabs: The Waffen-SS displays function or assignment on the right collar tab, rank on the left collar tab. Shown are tabs for Divisions with distinctive collar tabs issued and worn. Collar tabs have been identified on original uniforms and/or in period photographs.
  • During World War II, the Waffen Grenadier Regiment of the SS (1st Romanian) (German: Waffen-Grenadier Regiment der SS (Rumänisches Nr. 1)) was formed from Romanian troops and the Fascist Iron Guard. It fought on the Oder front and near Berlin, where it was destroyed by the Soviet offensive in April 1945. Survivors fled to surrender to American forces. A second regiment was formed but lacked resources and served as a construction battalion. Commanders were SS-Sturmbannführer Gustav Wagner and SS-Standartenführer Albert Ludwig.
