Text Appearing Before Image:
e he painted the fine portrait of Carlyle and thepicture of his mother, his greatest works. The houses in London which have shelteredliterary genius are many, but perhaps Americans aremost interested in those associated with Dickensand Thackeray. Both moved frequently, so thatthere is no place which speaks of them as Carlyleshouse does of him. Many of the haunts of Dickensmay be identified as well as the originals of placesthat he mentions in his books. One of these is thecorner store, the original of Old Curiosity Shop. InDoughty street and Devonshire Square are housesin which Dickens wrote some of his best work andhis novels are full of vivid descriptions of London.Thackerays home at No. 16 Young street, Ken-sington, is noteworthy as the scene of the writing ofVanity Fair, which brought him tardy fame. He diedat No. 1 Palace Green, Kensington, on ChristmasEve, and his passing saddened thousands who hadlearned to love him, because his heart was tenderas is the heart of a woman. (148)
