Summary
[edit]| Description | This is Monday 30th January 1933 and it is the 284th anniversary of the execution of King Charles I. Members of the Royal Martyr Church Union led by the Rev. T.B. Woodd had processed from St. Martin in the Fields led by two pipers playing Flowers of the Forest' to the Le Seur equestrian statue of King Charles I on the south side of Trafalgar Square: The Rev. Woodd was descended from a Captain Basil Woodd who was Gentleman at Arms to King Charles I and had been present on the scaffold when the King was beheaded. The service had been an annual event since the Union was founded in 1906, I am not sure whether the service still takes place, I do know that 'The Sealed Knot' mark the anniversary every year at the statue. The Union was an Anglo Catholic organisations founded to restore the date of King Charles death to the Kalendar in the Book of Common Prayer, this was restored in 1980 the date when the Union almost ceased to exist, its headquarters are now in Edinburgh. Wreaths were laid by the Union, The Royal Stuart Society, The Society of King Charles the Martyr and The Order of the White Rose. Two Cannon Row PCs in capes can be seen on the left of the photograph. |
