Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hallo Ceradon, I have moved your comment to here (from my talk page) to keep it at my message about this.

The new source is not much better. There I can see a photo of the same structures - but it is really not the photo you have uploaded here. Just tell me/us where the photo is from which you have uploaded.

I give you an example, that would be a good source: "http://www.federalnewsradio.com/?nid=445&sid=2654479 → http://media.dev-cms.com/wtop/23/2317/231727.jpg"

Note that this is just a example of a proper source - we couldn't use this photo since it is by a photographer from the press agency AP which are not public domain or freely licensed. First of all, Thank you for being so nice to me. Basically all the admins Ive met have made snobby remarks. Nice to know bad apples don't ruin the whole bunch. And this link I think is a good source. You're welcome. :-) You want to learn and want do it right - perfect - so I try to explain it. Better once right than frustrated users and continuing bad uploads.

That is a slide show and the link always brings the visitor to the first image - so "image 3/11" would be needed to locate the image properly.

This makes it clear: first where the author/license information is from and second what the exact image is. Obtaining such an image link is not always possible nor easy. Here I got it my clicking on the image to see the full size view and then by right clicking it and selecting "copy image address".

I have made some changes to the file page now.

I am not fully sure that "Photo: National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency" means that it was shot by an employee of this agency. Couldn't it mean "we got the photo from the NGA"? Do you know of other copies of this photo? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:00, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

US rank insignia

I noticed you made a few insignia moves with the rationale "More appropriate as new name follows the US pay grade system". I object to this because US pay grade system isn't as important as the STANAG which provides equivalence to individual rank insignia. A file that you uploaded to Wikimedia Commons from Flickr, File:The West House near Malvern Hill.jpg, was found available on Flickr by an administrator or reviewer under the license Noncommercial (), No derivative works (), or All Rights Reserved (), which isn't compatible with Wikimedia Commons, per the licensing policy. The file has been deleted. Commons:Flickr files/Appeal for license change has information about sending the Flickr user an appeal asking for the license to be changed. Only Flickr images tagged as (CC BY), (CC BY-SA), (CC0) and (PDM) are allowed on Wikimedia Commons. If the Flickr user has changed the license of the Flickr image, feel free to ask an administrator to restore the file, or start an undeletion request.

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning.
