First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Arosio Stefano!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Re-El GIOCHI TV.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

 • The game console image rights is owned by the company I believe. Its not copyright free. --Leoboudv (talk) 20:11, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
 • The company that created the console owns the rights to the packaging of the box console. You focused on the image of the box packaging that the console comes in and not the console device itself. That makes it a derivative image and copyrighted by the company. If you took a photo of the console then it would be OK since it would be functional...like a car or an Apple device like this image below:

The quality of the photo is low, but I added it because it can be the only one chance to have one photo of this rare console.
If you follow the two photo links below, you can understand that the deleted photo is not the packaging of the box console but is the console device itself. The strange (colorful) slim and wide real console (in the deleted photo) is placed vertically laid against the wall. There is not a box in the deleted photo (In the first link you can see that the packaging is grey).
Excuse my poor english.

Hi there,

Thank you for providing the additional information for my Prinztronic console uploads- it was very informative (I didn't realise that the console was basically "stupid" and most of the important stuff was in the cart!)

However, if you don't mind, I'll rewrite your changes slightly. Not for technical reasons, but because I'm uncomfortable with the way it puts words in my mouth, i.e. it makes it look like I was the one that said all that stuff.

Once again, thanks for the contribution. All the best! Multicherry (talk) 22:56, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Prinztronic cartridge

[edit]

Hi,

I just logged in under this account for the first time in almost a year(!), so I only recently saw your message on my talk page:-

I would like to let you know that I have created this page (it:Serie PC-50x) that use your photo. May be you can also upload the photo of your cartrige?

Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of the cartridge. The cartridge label is in quite bad condition, so would probably need to be Photoshopped in from elsewhere. If I have time, I'll look into finding the cartridge and photographing it at some point. All the best. Multicherry (talk) 19:45, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have now uploaded some images you may find of interest:-
As I mentioned before, the cartridge label is in bad condition... but it still works. :-) All the best, Multicherry (talk) 23:59, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:AEG MIGNON typewriter Model 4.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

The Video game Barnstar

When I set out to list all the consoles from the first generation, I knew this wasn't going to be an easy task, there's just so many. But the hardest step is to start, after that, more people can help, and accomplish what one never could do alone. And you've been helping out tremendously, all those photos you've been finding, and most importantly, the Wikidata pages.

I like to think I can do some stuff with formatting on Wikipedia, but Wikidata pages are just out of my reach, I have no idea how to work them. But you've been steadily creating them, and look at how much you've done to help, I salute you and thank you for all you've done to preserve this.

I myself have been extremely busy, but once I have a free day, I'll embark on another huge endeavor, a list of all the electronic games. While I had a vague idea as to how many 1st Gen consoles were there, these handhelds are a black hole of which I can't get a number from. Hope to see you in the future!

"Ridiculus", "annoy", "enjoy".... No, it's a guideline/rule. You should try to change this rule and not annoy me. You should force Commons to change it's mind about this rule. If I hadn't done this request, someone else in the future will do it in my place because there is this rule. So, please, go to discuss this rule, to argue about it's principles, to fight against it. Thanks for uploading File:Olivetti Logos 41 PD.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

We need your feedback!

[edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

File:NEC PC-88 VA.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello. This message is to inform you that a daily gallery in your userspace, User:Arosio Stefano/VideoGames, has failed. Your gallery has a hard upper-limit of about 8000 files per day, while your gallery would have had 61097 files (including files already on the page).

This usually happens because a gallery is too broad, encompassing too many subcategories. Please review the logs here and request that a subcategory be excluded, or narrow your category choice(s).

Please make your request for removal at User talk:OgreBot/gallery within 4 days, or your gallery will be subject to removal.

Hi, Many of these files content may be in the public domain due to lack of copyright notice. Anything from USA before 1989 needs a copyright notice. So it could help if you add the date of these games where it is missing. Yann (talk) 09:43, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, there are not Pong consoles after 1985. "Mouse maze" was made in 1987(now I add the date) Arosio Stefano (talk) 10:50, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

[edit]

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with C2 if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or C1 if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:E&P Electronic TV Sport Games EP800. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 21:09, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Ford GT-90. 1997 by Mattel inc..jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk. The file you added will soon be deleted. If you believe this file is not a derivative work of a non-free work, please explain why on the file's talk page.
