First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

incorrect schematic for resonant inverter

[edit]

Your schemtics http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Scanner_lamp_converter-DC12V-AC2kV.svg looks like nonsence: both colletors should be connected to the primary windings & the resonance cap should be placed between collectors.

For Christ's sake please google for "Royer oscillator CCFL" to get an idea how this circuit should look like.

This image has been redrawn from some physical circuit; I intended to review it later and contribute to the electronics wikibook. I never found time to do it, so let us delete the schematic from commons and it will be fine. --FDominec (talk) 09:24, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

OK

[edit]
Thanks.

Hi there is a small mistake in the labelling of your image (underweight is misspelled). Lycaon 18:49, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hot keyboard :). Corrected, thanks. If you found some label clumsy, write me. --FDominec 19:39, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. I have indeed found some label clumsyness, see my post here. I would correct it myself, but i'm sorry to say that i don't know how to save the map in the SVG format... -- Jokes Free4Me 23:06, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Schematic template

[edit]

I just made Image:Transmission line symbols.svg based on your Image:Electrical symbols library.svg. It looks decent and is ok to work with, but the size on the image description page should be a lot bigger. Can you change the native snapping and unit size in the original so that the schematics shown on the image description page are big and have to be scaled down instead of up? For simple schematics, the thumbnail in the article will be bigger than the image on the description page.  :-) — Omegatron 02:25, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Although I consider the size of this image to be O. K., there was no problem to resize the image to 200%. I uploaded the new version. Tip: You can use the template ElCompLib. --FDominec 07:11, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. — Omegatron 15:19, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Another question: I am going to draw internal connection of TTL IOs (gates, latches etc.). Shall I draw the chips horizontally or vertically? --FDominec 07:16, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They can always be rotated, right? When I tried to do the same thing last year, I was going to include every orientation in the same image:

(gallery commented out)

I was thinking more along the lines of using an editor like Klunky, though, as explained on my user page. Inkscape is probably better. — Omegatron 15:19, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but I will draw about 20 images of TTLs with description, and I would feel stupid when I decided to rotate them after all. I would like the most, if QUCS had SVG support. Besides of easy vector schematics creation it would make the program nicer. I am going to write its authors. --FDominec 14:50, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think horizontal looks better, but both are used in datasheets.
w:Wikipedia:WikiProject_Electronics/Programs shows other ways to get SVG graphs, such as Xcircuit. We don't want diagrams generated by circuit simulation programs anyway, since they're for illustration purposes. We want high-quality diagrams that look nice. — Omegatron 18:40, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

After discussion with czech colleagues, I will draw most of them vertically. My idea was, that the SVG export in QUCS would be able to create as nice images as Inkscape, preserving information about connection. (This would be the best solution at all, but I am not sure whether anybody would spend enough time with programming.) --FDominec 20:39, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Draw the TTLs vertically or horizontally?

[edit]

Image:tmp_chips_vethorz.svg

What orientation is better? (Consider:

 1. aesthetic appearance
 2. what is more usual
 3. what can make the internal schematics reasier to take in etc.) --FDominec 06:39, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Laser stability diagram

[edit]

I like your new Laser stability diagram, but it contains one small error: you closed off the shaded region with black lines at the edges of the graph, implying that the stability region stops there. It does not. It continues. Worse, it makes it appear like the stability curves in the first and third quadrants do some strange jump to zero at some undefined value of g1 or g2.

How did you generate the curves? Did you produce them from the correct formula, or did you draw them freehand?--Srleffler 22:49, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are right and I have corrected it. (I have rendered it using the correct formula y=1/x. Then I cropped the output function with a rectangle. ) --FDominec 19:13, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

use of image Electronic_component_germanium_diode.jpg for facebook quiz

[edit]

hiya - hope you don't mind but I have used this image in makeing my facebook quiz "what kind of diode are you?" I have included your user name on the page info and said its from commons - would you like me to do anything else? If you don't want me to use this image I can change it. thanks! Alexander110

No problem. (I would like to see the quiz, but I could not find it anymore.) --FDominec (talk) 15:31, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, FDominec!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi! The '51 is one of those TTL ICs where the pinout differs between technologies. The pinout in the picture is correct for 74LS51 but the picture is labelled 7451 (for 7451 pins 11 and 12 are not connected). Perhaps you can correct this and make two images? Cheers, Drahtlos (talk) 13:35, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thank you, I fixed the label in the file. --FDominec (talk) 22:00, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Coaxial_cable_cut

[edit]

Dear FDominec, we are currently working on a student textbook with the title “Biologie” scheduled to be published in 2019. In addition an electronic version of this book is planned which will be sold to scientific institutions and libraries. In this book we would like to use the following illustration

Coaxial_cable_cut.

We want to kindly ask you for the nonexclusive permission to use this material in this and future editions of our book including the electronic version and for the German speaking countries (Germany/Austria/Switzerland). Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Kindest regards--UniDuE Biodiversity (talk) 12:48, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.
