Squadron Photo from World War II

Hi, I would like to upload an old government photo in our family's possession for many years that was taken in June 1944 of a U.S. squadron based in the Central Pacific in World War II. Is that permisable? Thanks. Akiva123 (talk) 02:37, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Akiva123: When you say "government photo": do you know for certain that it was taken by a military (or other) employee of the U.S. government who took the photo in the line of duty? If so, then it is certainly public domain. If not, what do you know about who took it and when (if ever) it had any sort of publication (even if limited to making copies for the people in the squadron)? - Jmabel ! talk 03:18, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, definitely a U.S. Marine Corps photo taken of the squadron at the time. I tried uploading it, and I believe I chose the option indicating it was a government photo, but it wasn't accepted. Suggestions? Thanks! Akiva123 (talk) 20:53, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It was rejected automatically, as the system saw it as a probable copyright violation (a "web resolution" photo). If you have the photo, please scan it with bigger resolution. If the photo is tiny and using a big resolution really doesn't make sense, then we have to find som other solution, but if the photo is 2" wide and you scan at 600 ppi I think there will be no problem in uploading the result. –LPfi (talk) 06:44, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • And if all you have is the low-res image, and the image is PD, you just have to upload it directly to Commons instead of doing a cross-wiki upload, because we filter the latter more heavily (far more potential copyvios in the latter, because people working on other wikis often have not given any thought it copyright of images). - Jmabel ! talk 08:13, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Thanks so much for your help. I took your advice and re-scanned the photo at 600dpi, but still get the same message: "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable." Any other suggestions of what I might do to upload the photo successfully? Thanks in advance. Akiva123 (talk) 20:01, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your previous try was a 19813-byte jpeg of 256×203 px. The new try was a 14934-byte jpeg of 128×95 px, which at 600 ppi means something like 5·4 mm. It seems something went wrong, unless I misunderstand the entries totally. (The log entries are Special:AbuseLog/9743463 and Special:AbuseLog/9750567 respectively.) –LPfi (talk) 07:50, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Searching the Special:AbuseLog with the user name into the "user" box. [1] -- Asclepias (talk) 15:57, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: The user contributions page has a link to the abuse log for the user, in the link row before the contribution list. –LPfi (talk) 19:28, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Any guidance most appreciated. Thanks! Akiva123 (talk) 00:49, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Akiva123: LPfi indicates above that these are tiny images: "a 19813-byte jpeg of 256×203 px" and "14934-byte jpeg of 128×95 px" If that latter is 600dpi, that is smaller than a human fingernail, so I suspect there is something wrong with the files. What does your own system say about the file size and dimensions of the file you are trying to upload (if it's a PC, you can get the dimensions via Properties)? - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The original photo is letter paper in size (8.5 x 11 inches). I scanned the photo on a flatbed printer, choosing the 600 dpi option. The resulting JPEG is 15KB in size and 128 x 95 in dimensions. Does that help? Really appreciate your help! Akiva123 (talk) 02:57, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Odd. 128px/11" would be less than 12 ppi, i.e. each pixel would cover some 2×2 mm. Does the resulting image look like that? Is the original fuzzy enough for that to make sense? –LPfi (talk) 07:35, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
With that large an original you could try with the default scanner settings. Did those result in the 256×203 px file? Look at the files you tried to upload, in full resolution, and compare to the original: Do they look the same? Did the scans capture all detail? If the scans indeed are good, then we should get them here (I think what you got at upload were just warnings, you might be able to just go ahead), but to me it seems there is some weirdness to be solved. –LPfi (talk) 07:46, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You figured out the problem! Yes, the photo size was too small. It somehow shrunk while transferring from USB drive. All fixed now. Thank you all so much for your help! Akiva123 (talk) 03:42, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Akiva123: Thank you for uploading File:Squadron VMSB-151-Engebi Island-June1944.jpg. Is there any more information you can share about the cause of the shrinkage which may inform COM:HD?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:26, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Change of pictures

Hi! I have for a very long time wondered about how to change pictures. I've been using Wikipedia and Wikibooks for about 20 years now and I have never understood how to change a picture. I mainly upload circuit diagrams and often I see a tiny thing that I wish to change. Up till now the only solution has been to upload a new picture with another name. But I think it is a sad thing if Commons has a lot of pictures that are not relevant. So how do I do if I wish to edit a picture? Knoppson (talk) 21:13, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to upload a new version of an image, there's normally a link "Upload a new version of this file" below, which should do just that. You should only do this for correcting obvious errors. If your change is more a matter of opinion or taste, it is better to upload a new image and let the Wikimedians of the respective Wikipedias choose which image to use in their articles. For disk space, it doesn't make a difference, all versions of a file are kept, anyhow. --rimshottalk 22:15, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The link is at the file description page. Sometimes clicking the image lands you on the "image viewer" instead, and then you have to click "more information" or the like to get to the proper description. Below the image description and the licence template, there is the upload history, and just below it the link for uploading a new version. –LPfi (talk) 06:49, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you overwrite an existing image with a new image, you should check whether or not the change will affect any Wikipedia articles. If it does, you should either create a new name for the updated file, modify the relevant Wikipedia entry or notify somebody on the relevant Wikipedia of the change.
As an example, I update the image File:IBANMap-World6.svg as and when new countries adopt the IBAN. The image has the date of last update on it. I checked all Wikipedias that used the file and I updated one of them myself. For reasons that I need not discuss here, I have been blocked on the Simple Wikipedia, so I contacted an administrator who got shirty with me. As a result when that image is used on Simple:International_Bank_Account_Number, the caption does not make sense - not my fault, the administrator's fault! Martinvl (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 21:34, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Martinvl: I updated that caption for you. How did you contact Auntof6 or Djsasso?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:56, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: : Thank you for the update. In response to your question, yes, I pinged both User:Auntof6 and User:Djsasso from my Talk page one two separate occasions to inform them that the map had been updated and that the caption was out of date. On the first occasion (22 February 2021), one of them updated the caption. However on the second occasion (24 November 2021) regarding a further update, I had my talk page access removed. Needless to say, the removal of my talk page access for what I regarded as an act of courtesy left a very bad taste in my mouth. Martinvl (talk) 20:05, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

So the current Wikipedia page for Hankook Tire has an outdated logo as of about 4 years ago it turns out. I want to upload the updated logo in order to replace it on it's page, but I don't think I've been instructed in clear and concise language just HOW I would go about doing so. I know it's not against the guidelines, so how am I supposed to specify the details of the image in order to upload it? Hello alpine (talk) 03:55, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Currently there are 3 images of the logo at Commons. Two of them (one "logo as of 2019") have a wrong license and one of these has a COPYVIO tag for deletion. The third is an SVG claiming missing the TOO. This third may be the current logo, so you do not need to upload another one and can simply replace it in the article. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:25, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hello alpine: In case it is not File:Hankook Tire logo.svg, which C.Suthorn just referred to: without seeing the logo, I have no idea if it is complex enough to qualify for copyright. If it is, then it can't go on Commons without a license from the copyright-holder of the image. If it is just text, you can upload and use {{PD-textlogo}} in lieu of a license. See Commons:Threshold_of_originality#South_Korea for more about the threshold of originality in South Korea.
If it is over the threshold of originality, and therefore subject to copyright, it should not go on Commons. Several wikipedias, including the English-language Wikipedia, have reasonably permissive policies for handling non-free logos, but that is strictly within that wikipedia and does not involve Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 08:30, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is it actually possible to use it in the Wikipedia article without the image being in Commons first, though? Hello alpine (talk) 08:35, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Provided that the wikipedia in question has a "fair use" policy and the local upload adheres to that fair use policy. But you would have to ask that at the wikipedia in question. English language wikipedia has a fair use policy, but it is complex and difficult to obey. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 09:08, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is worth noting though that the prior logo used was falsely uploaded under a self-owned copyright tag, and several other logos for tire companies seem to be uploaded under the pretense of "geometric shapes or text that don't meet the threshold for copyright protection". Would that apply here instead, and I could just change the tag on it? Hello alpine (talk) 19:50, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

File type not accepted

https://www.usgs.gov/media/images/ken-hon-scientist-charge-usgs-hawaiian-volcano-observatory I am trying to upload this PD-USGov image, but the file type is not supported! How do I get it onto commons? BhamBoi (talk) 23:36, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@BhamBoi: the image there is a JPEG, so whatever problem you are having is not about the file type. Just to make sure you know: you can't upload to Commons directly from an arbitrary Internet site. You need to download this to your computer, then upload to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:59, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I downloaded it. I clicked "original", saved image, then it was a .jfif BhamBoi (talk) 01:01, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah to update, I tried again. When you right click and press save on it, it says it is saving as a JPEG. But as soon as you actually save it, it's in your files as a JFIF. Any ideas? BhamBoi (talk) 02:07, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@BhamBoi: Bunches of converters online, but I've never tried one. Also probably convertible by GIMP, ImageMagick, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 03:45, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Most likely it is a jpeg, but the file extension is for some reason jfif. If that is the case, than renaming it to jpg, jpeg or JPeG should be enough to upload at commons. There is a lossless variant of jpeg (jpeg2000?) that is patented and not allowed at commons. In that case loading with gimp and saving with a quality of 99% or less should do the trick. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 04:07, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
JFIF is actually JPEG. Sometimes files found online have a different extension than a standard, which may fool Commons into thinking the file type is not supported. If you rename the .jfif extension into .jpg, Commons should actually accept the file with no issues (if you are on Windows, you may need to disable "Hide known file extensions" option in Windows Explorer settings, Linux users shouldn't have this issue). If Commons still reject the file for being of an unsupported file type, then use a conversion tool or open it in a graphics editor (GIMP is a free and open source alternative to let's say Photoshop) and simply save the opened image as JPEG, with the .jpg extension. Polda18 D C 09:31, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@BhamBoi: Thank you for uploading File:Ken Hon (P1030368).jpg. I tried right click and save while viewing that URL in Chrome on Windows 10, and I ended up with filename "P1030368.jpg".   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:42, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I want to delete one file

Hello, I want to delete a file I uploaded. It was a mistake and I wanted to upload a different one. How I can delete it? Molcelgen (talk) 16:02, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tag it with {{Speedy|G7 User request}}
Or if the name is OK (including file extension, I note you've uploaded a .tif which we don't often use) then just upload the correct version over it as a new version. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:09, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Molcegen: within 7 days of upload, if the file isn't being used on any Wikimedia projects, you can use {{Speedy|G7 User request}} as described above.
If you don't want the original photo out there, I'd recommend against just overwriting. That does nothing to prevent deliberate reuse of the original. - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! I tried that. But I can just do it with the new version of the file. Will that delete all of them?? Molcelgen (talk) 07:44, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can ask for a revision delete to get rid of old versions C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 10:46, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Molcelgen: You may do that with {{Overwritten revdel}} or follow the instructions at COM:REVDEL#How to request Revision Deletion.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:19, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can I use Wikimedia to display a local history society's archives?

I belong to a local history society in England. We have perhaps 5000 paper records and articles which we want to scan and put on the internet for public access. Many other local history societies have created their own websites for a similar purpose, but we are reluctant to reinvent the wheel yet again by creating our own small website. We would much prefer to use an existing system for displaying our content. Can we do this on Wikimedia, or on any other of the Wiki family systems? Thanks for your help, Ian Black Whistian (talk) 10:38, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Whistian The Wikisource project may be, what you are looking for. They have specific rules: Upload the material, than transcribe (manually (not OCR!), but with tools they provide), than have it corrected by other contributors, who will do that only, if you also correct material from other contributors. But it is probably the best way to go. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 10:51, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Whistian: I second the Wikisource recommendation. (To be clear, Wikisource does use OCR as the basis for transcriptions, with manual correction and formatting afterwards. You also don't have to commit to correcting other users' transcriptions.) I recommend checking out s:en:Help:Contents and s:en:Wikisource:What Wikisource includes, and I'm also happy to answer any questions you might have!
If your records are in the public domain (or otherwise freely licensed) in the UK and in the US, the scans can be hosted on Commons, and hopefully then transcribed on Wikisource. (You don't have to commit to transcribing them before you upload.) If they're in the public domain in the US but not in the UK, they can be hosted on Wikisource, but I don't know what the relevant laws about that are for you in the UK. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 01:19, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your advice. I’ve looked at Wikipedia, and W Commons, which look promising, but hadn’t thought of Wikisource. I’ll have a look, particularly at the OCR to make the scans searchable. Thanks, Whistian 80.3.231.206 06:55, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New page approval

Hi all, I made a new page last month but I'm not sure how long things usually take to get approval to go live. Can anyone shed any light please? Jblcfc1884 (talk) 10:50, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jblcfc1884. I think you might be mixing up Commons with English Wikipedia. The primary role of Commons is to host media files; it's not really set up to host encyclopedic articles. The page you seem to be asking about is your English Wikipedia user sandbox en:User:Jblcfc1884/sandbox. What might be confusing you is the meaning of the button "Publish changes": it doesn't mean "publish" in the sense of "publish a new article", but rather "publish" as in "save the changes made during a particular editing session". In other words, drafts for articles aren't automatically added to English Wikipedia as en:Wikipedia:Articles by clicking "Publish changes"; they should instead be submitted for review as explained in en:Wikipedia:Articles for creation. You can ask about more about this at either en:Wikipedia:Teahouse or en:Wikipedia:Help desk (asking at one of the two pages is fine). You also might want to take a look at en:Wikipedia:Notability (events) because whether your draft is ultimately accepted as an article is going to depend on whether the event is considered en:Wikipedia:Notable. Finally, the members of the en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Running or en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany might be able to help you assess the Wikipedia notability of the event. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:16, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@ElDanyC: Welcome to Wikimedia Commons! Your account is too new to be allowed to overwrite an existing file. But you probably shouldn't overwrite the file for this kind of thing anyway. Better to upload your flag under its own name (for instance using Special:UploadWizard. Then you can replace the uses on the English Wikipedia as appropriate. This is especially true if anyone might disagree about what the "true" flag is. Based on en:Talk:Flag of the Republic of the Rio Grande it's clear that there's at least some uncertainty about this. --bjh21 (talk) 22:05, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading an image from the english wikipedia to here in order to be able to use it globally

No, of course not. It has a non free use rationale and cannot be hosted on commons or used on other wikipedias without a fair use policy. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 10:57, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's unfair; works with non-free use rationales at the English Wikipedia are frequently uploaded here. I think I could make an argument for PD in the US, but China's laws offer more protection for text calligraphy.--Prosfilaes (talk) 14:23, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Those uploads are eighter copyvio (and therefore quickly deleted afterwards), or the copyright simply expired and therefore those works can be uploaded. Nothing unfair here. Polda18 D C 09:35, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Logos like the one being questioned frequently fall under the threshold of originality, and it's not particularly clear whether they do. People upload them to the English Wikipedia and slap a non free rationale on them without even considering whether they are PD-simple.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:16, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's also one possible explanation. To be fair though, it's sometimes quite hard to tell, especially if you don't specifically know the country of origin. Take a look at COM:TOO#Czech Republic

The work must be "a unique outcome of the creative activity of the author".[121/2000–2006 Art.2(1)]
For photographs and computer programs, it suffices if the work "is original in the sense that it is the author’s own intellectual creation".[121/2000–2006 Art.2(2)]

You don't really know where the threshold is from this particular legalese text. It could mean anything. Polda18 D C 06:48, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

自分で撮った写真をアップロードはOK?

自分自身で写した、たとえばiPhoneで自分自身の写真を撮ってウィキペディア・コモンズにアップロードするのは可? Carlostad (talk) 02:55, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Carlostad: There are two circumstances under which such a picture would be welcome:
If you make significant contributions to Commons or to some other WMF project, then it is reasonable to have a small number of personal photos for your User page on any given WMF wiki. However, since the question above appears to be your first contribution to any WMF projects, you would not yet qualify to do that. Make a few dozen useful contributions before you upload a selfie on this basis (and then use it on your user page, or it will be deleted as an unused personal photo).
If you happen to be "notable" -- e.g. if there is a Wikipedia article about you, or you play a significant role in something about which there is an article, Commons category, etc. -- then, sure. But I'm guessing that is not the case, or you probably would have mentioned it.
In short: probably not, but if you become an active user here, then eventually you would be welcome to do so. - Jmabel ! talk 06:37, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is a third circumstance: If you have an interesting talent - lets say juggling - and you make a photo of yourself demonstrating this talent and it is an useful depiction of the talent, then you can do that. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 13:52, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

how illustrate quality of an image

I'm seeking to update a Wikipedia article on "Active-Matrix Liquid Crystal Display." A prior contributor claimed that the "first functional AMLCD" was made at Westinghouse in 1972. Descriptions of their work indicate that they were only able to display a very low resolution "image" without grey scale; it had 36 pixels as I recall. At the time, in competition, Hughes Aircraft Company was working on building a 100x100 10,000 pixel Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display. The concept was granted patent 3,862,360 on 01Jan.'75. In contrast to the Westinghouse approach, Hughes was showing live off-the-air television on its display. I'd like to be able to teach the state of the art at that time by presenting an photo of the display displaying a facsimile of a photo that had been published in a magazine.

To my knowledge, the Hughes was the first to demonstrate recognizable moving images on a liquid crystal display panel. At another time I can tell the story of why Hughes did not follow through to make it into the commercial product that it has become.

The photo teaches the state of the art of Hughes’ display technology in 1975. The photo was taken by a photographer from the Hughes Aircraft Company photo laboratory in Culver City.

The image, shows a low-resolution facsimile of a portion of an image of a woman as it was being displayed on a liquid crystal display. The display shows a facsimile of a photo originally printed in a magazine on photography; its poor quality renders it useless for commercial opportunities.

A similar image of the same face was published in the “Electronics” magazine, February 19,1976, page 29. In 1976, Electronics magazine was published by McGraw-Hill Inc. ; it ceased publication in 1995. A publication clearance was obtained prior to the appearance of the photo in Electronics magazine, but the documentation has since been lost.

The image was also published In the "HUGHES NEWS," Vol 35, No. 6, March 19, 1976, page 1.

Although a similar image can be found on the Internet, the low quality of the image does not communicate the status of the technology in 1975. The image can be found in the IR Handbook edited by Wolfe & Zissis, published by the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan for the Office of Naval Research, Dept. of the Navy, Washington DC., 1978 An electronic copy of the handbook can be found at https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA100015.pdf, and the image appears on page 18-14, web page 1261 of 1765. I am cited as a contributor to that handbook on page viii.

Is there a way to present a better quality image to Wikipedia readers? LAwindsailor (talk) 21:22, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Threshold of originality

Take a look at w:File:Junkee Media.png. Surely this does not pass the threshold of originality, right? It's a simple typeset with a rotated square (diamond) in the centre. I'm aware that different places have different agreements on what surpasses and what does not surpass the threshold, but I'm curious as to if this even needs a non-free media use rationale? It seems to me like it doesn't pass. I'm asking this partially because I want to know if it's okay to transfer this to Commons in the first place as it doesn't seem like it'd do any wrong. Can I upload an anthem on Wikimedia Commons? Nathaniel Gambao (talk) 07:32, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is it a national anthem? If so, then it should be in public domain, so yes. Though I would suggest you to first convert MP3 into a free format instead. Commons uses OGG Vorbis. Polda18 D C 08:26, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
MP3 is a free format and you can upload mp3s as soon as you are an experienced user. You can also transcode the mp3 to OGGvorbis (and upload with the file extension .oga) or to opus (the audio format of webm), wav, or flac (for best quality). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 09:05, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I would still prefer OGG Vorbis or Opus than MP3. Reason behind this is that OGG and Opus are arguiably better formats, more efficient and better quality, while maitaining the same bitrate. MP3 format however used to be licensed, especially the codec was licensed. That means the format wasn't always free. Polda18 D C 10:04, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Nathaniel Gambao: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload mp3 files with insufficient rights and another filter. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 09:56, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think all national anthems are in the public domain (PD). In some countries there is special legislation making them PD, but mostly they follow normal copyright laws. If the score (and text, if sung) isn't very old it may very well be under copyright: for most countries copyright extends 70 years after the composer's death. Additionally the performance and recording may be protected. –LPfi (talk) 14:03, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The last being the most important: for most recordings of PD works, the recordings themselves will be copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 15:31, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel and LPfi: Yes, it depends on the jurisdiction of the country. Majority of countries however utilize special law which makes all works related to government (including national anthems) public domain. Recording is something else, as if it isn't performed by a state orchestra, then copyright exception doesn't apply. State orchestra may release their performance of national anthem in public domain, required by law. Most of the time the uploader should be fine. However one should always refer to COM:CRT for more informations about what they can and cannot upload on Commons regard of the country of origin. Polda18 D C 18:53, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, to me it's surprising how few countries make gov't works other than actual legal documents, etc., public domain. Far less common than I would have expected - Jmabel ! talk 20:01, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In Germany a legal issue at the moment: Government says documents commissioned by the state are copyrighted, citizen rights activists (fragdenstaat.de) say, these documents can never be copyrigthed, they were paid for by the tax payer, therefore everyone has a right to get and use them in any way. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 04:45, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Germany is like that. Their federal police symbols are also copyrighted, you cannot use them in any way without a license, and therefore those symbols cannot be found on Commons eighter. And German Wikipedia doesn't allow Fair Use, so you can't find it there eighter. Czechia does actually issue government documents in public domain, that's by law. That includes our national anthem as well. I'm not sure about the status of a performance by an official state philharmonic orchestra though, and I don't know if the sound file even is on Commons. Money though, and I mean the design, is rarely copyright protected. Polda18 D C 07:26, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The download link on https://www.flickr.com/photos/emilianogarciapage/34060570573/ is trying to pull a Jedi mind trick, it says "These aren't the droids you're looking for." This video is the source for File:Presdiente.clm expo.cuenca 240517 (34060570573).jpg, which has a bad aspect ratio (too tall). Have you seen this before?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:16, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pixels in jpeg files are always square. In most videos, the pixels are also square, but they can also have any other aspect ratio. Therefore, the aspect ratio of the pixels is also stored in videos. This is possibly one such video, and the image extraction has naively assumed square pixels. Downloading the video and using ffmpeg to extract an image could already be the solution. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 19:44, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It seems like the image comes from the thumbnail shown on Flickr before playing the video. You can clearly see that the thumbnail has the exact same weird aspect ratio. Polda18 D C 20:24, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DeirgeDel: Sorry not to have gotten there sooner. External links on category pages are certainly acceptable, but a link directly to a photo like this, with no author or copyright info, probably is not. Using a photo used in an italian wiki page in a english wiki page

The italian wiki page of Enrico Piaggio has of photo of him. The english page has no photo and I would like to add the same as in the italian page. @Claudio.Carmeli: : The file you are referring to is w:it:File:Enrico piaggio.jpg. It is stated there that file cannot be loaded here to commons for copyright reasons. As the person is died it is possible to load a minimal image of the person under fair-use/non-free cootent criterial to accompany the article w:en:Enrico Piaggio. See for example w:Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide. My impression of w:it:File:Enrico piaggio.jpg is that it would need to be tastefully cropped about the head and shoulders to get the required size/resolution. The process then is to use w:en:Wikipedia:File upload wizard selecting Upload a non-free file or alternatively see if anyone will help out at w:en:Wikipedia:Files for upload. @IRIS ALBARRAN MILLAN you made this request at Commons. Commons is an image databade. If your exhusband uploaded any images, you can ask for these to be deleted, but you will have to provide a way to identify these images. If your exhusband is writing bad about you, then he is probably doing that on one of the sister projects (like en.wikipedia.org, or any other of >800 projects within Wikipedia). In that case you have to request help at the specific project. If your exhusband is defaming you on multiple projects, you may get help at meta.wikimedia.org and in an extreme case he may get a global ban. Uploading Photographs from a Mediæval Manuscript

Hi,

I am unsure about whether I may be able to upload photographs I took of a Mediæval manuscript that I was permitted to view at Hereford Cathedral - that being a Wycliffe Bible of 1420. The Cathedral staff told me I am permitted to share the photos, although I must give full credit to the Cathedral & its library for them, and they cannot be used for monetary gain. Would this condition prevent me from being allowed to upload them to the collection of examples of Scribal Abbreviations (the category linked below)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Category:Scribal abbreviations. Nusrich 06 (talk) 11:43, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Nusrich 06: The Cathedral staff has no right on your pictures of a public domain document. So you can publish them on Commons (or elsewhere) under the conditions you choose. On Commons, the images should be under a free license. However it is usually nice to mention the Cathedral staff for permitting you to take pictures, and more generally for taking care of this document. Yann (talk) 11:55, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote this draft file description. Is this sufficient?

Sony Music Entertainment Sweden has released a bunch of promotional pictures under a Creative Commons license: https://www.mynewsdesk.com/se/sonybmg/images/

However, when I upload the pictures I'm a bit unsure on what license to select because they don't specify what license they use. They have the following text under every image (taken from this image:

Creative Commons Attribution

With a Creative Commons license, you retain your copyright but allow other people to copy and distribute your work provided they acknowledge you as the author. You permit others to copy, distribute, display and perform the work, as well as to create adaptations of it.

So what license do I select when uploading: Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0, Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0, Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.5, or one of their non-ShareAlike counterparts?

I interprete the google translation you provided to mean, that the work is published "cc-by" without requiring a specific version. That would allow you to upload as cc-by-4.0. The 4.0-version is the newest and the only that does not suffer from a fault, that all former versions had (described in Cory Doctorow's articles). Cover Art

Hello. If I were to upload the cover art for a song or an album, how would I Legally do that? Cherrell410 (talk) 00:53, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Cherrell410: Assuming this is talking about uploads to Commons (as against some context such as a record review where "fair use" might be allowed), and we are not talking about (for example) century-old artwork, the answer is almost always going to be, "only by having an explicit, sufficiently free license granted by the copyright-holder of the artwork in question." Most cover art is copyrightable and, in most countries, copyrightable work is automatically copyrighted at creation. Only the holder of the copyright can grant a meaningful license to use their work. - Jmabel ! talk 02:29, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you are probably referring to w:File:What Are We Waiting For? - For King & Country.jpg which is actually uploaded to Wikipedia which is separate from Commons. Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be freely used by anyone for any purpose, including: use in any work, creation of derivative works, commercial use and free distribution. ‘Fair Use’ criteria does not apply here: see Fair Use on Commons. HOWEVER; Wikipedia, itself (i.e. not Commons) may allow the hosting and limited use of a low resolution ‘non-free’ image in an article, where the item is itself the subject of the article, as this may constitute ‘Fair Use’. A detailed Rationale must be provided to show how the criteria for this are met – a reviewing editor will have the final say on this. Please have a read through the policy and guidelines at Wikipedia:Non-free content and Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline. A Fair Use template would then be attached to the Wikipedia image file page – it also includes a useful summary of instructions for the uploader. Please see the file you mentioned on the link above, as an example of how this works. FotoFree (talk) 17:12, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

From what I understand, it doesn't provide any information on who actually took the photos. Have you tried to research that, such as examining the metadata? Your approach appears to be one of "Why, I found so-and-so on such-and-such website, so therefore...", which accounts for a substantial amount of this site's problematic content as it is. Piecemeal DRs aren't going to cure that problem.RadioKAOS (talk) 05:58, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
These will be under the standard EPA license as they are not marked otherwise. The problem is that is don't know if that is PD-USGov or the vague license restrictions from their website. BhamBoi (talk) 06:04, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading/transferring a video from archive.org to wikicommons

Hi, I tried a few times to upload the following historical (1925) video by Tullio Locchi (author who died in 1926 and therefore largely out of copyright) on the commons

https://archive.org/details/piombino-inaugura-lacqua-potabile-alla-presenza-di-s.-m.-il-re

via the direct archive org transfer mechanism of the video Everything would seem to fall within the requirements

but after a while the process fails. saying: Error

See the error message at the bottom of this page for more information

and below, in a smaller font:

Request from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx via cp6013 cp6013, Varnish XID 966652750
Error: 503, Backend fetch failed at Sat, 13 May 2023 12:30:32 GMT

I've tried several times on different days, with different accounts and from different machines, but always with the same result and I'm out of ideas. Trying to compress the video below 100mb and uploading it directly doesn't seem sensible to me, you would lose the quality of the video which is extraordinarily good (the video has been recently restored).

Can you help me? Thanks in advance. ALoopingIcon (talk) 07:22, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The webm file at archive org is 693MB. Most Upload tools for commons will fail with files larger than 600MB or 1.2GB (The HTTP500 response you get is typical for that). You can however download the video and than upload with either Rillke's bigchunkedupload script or with the free version of Offroader. Thanks for the kind suggestion! I can try to use the script for uploading, but I would like to have some pointers to a gentle introduction on how to use this script (I am not a great expert in using scripts in wikimedia). ALoopingIcon (talk) 20:06, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by "different accounts"? Sounds like puppetry to me. Polda18 D C 09:20, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Polda18: no rule against having multiple accounts here, as long as you don't use them in a misleading manner. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarification. I come from Czech Wikipedia, where puppet accounts are usually banned. Polda18 D C 19:31, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No puppetry at all! This error was reported to me by an archivist that tried to upload the file and after seeing the weird error asked help to me personally. I have a computer science background so I seemed appropriate (in the end I was not :) ) . I saw the error on her machine and her account and then I tried myself with my account. I'm willing to add a picture I created of the first page of the statutes of Club Ciclista Selvatà Tot Bike, to back up the information contained in https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_Ciclista_Selvat%C3%A0_Tot_Bike which page may be deleted due to the lack of external references. But it seems I did something incorrect which I ignore. Please help. Thanks. Florenci Costas Farré (talk) 10:47, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, the document is marked as your own work, which I assume is incorrect. I'm not sure if the document can be considered public domain, so I'll leave that up to someone more competent. As to the article in Catalan Wikipedia: what you have to do is to provide references that prove the notability and factual accuracy of the subject presented. References should be from independent sources, which means that there shouldn't be a serious doubt about the source independency on the subject matter. Also, references should be inserted using <ref>source</ref> directly in text providing direct sourcing for claims in the article text. The list of references is then generated by <references />. Some people also tend to insert <ref name="sourcename" /> tags with a unique name for each reference in the article in the text, and insert actual references <ref name="sourcename">source text</ref> inside <references></references> tags pair (it works identically to the most used approach, and I would argue it also works better because if you use wikicode editor like me, it can get quite chaotic with all the references breaking up the text flow, which this approach solves). Images are just for decoration, to fill up some missing space, but they're not as important as source links in references (and by link I mean referencing a source of the claim - could be a book source, without an online link, but it gives you an idea where to find the source in libraries, especially with ISBN specified).
