Beskrivelse

This picture shows peasants in Finland working on the field. They are members of a class called torppari, a person who works on a farm called torppa. Torppa was a rented farm.

The torppari paid his rent by working for the landlord in addition to earning his own living on his own torppa. This was very common in Finland before the torpparis were eventually given the right to own their land in a land reform in the beginning of the 20th century.
