From Proto-Indo-European *bʰēlH-. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic бѣлъ (bělŭ). See also բալ (bal).

Usage notes
Attested only in Stepʿannos Siwnecʿi, denoting a kind of fish. It has been shown that basic meaning of the word is ‘light-blue’, which has developed into the fish-name.
