Etymology

Derived in the Heian period from writing the man'yōgana kanji in the cursive sōsho style.

  1. The hiragana syllable (se), whose equivalent in katakana is (se). It is the fourteenth syllable of the gojūon order, and its position in gojūon tables is (SA-gyō, E-dan; “row SA, section E”).
