Etymology

From the post-classical Old Armenian infinitive ending -իլ, which was created following the mediopassive present tense verb endings.

  1. One of four suffixes added to verb stems to form their infinitive, the others being -ել (-el), -ալ (-al), and -ուլ (-ul)

Probably from the Proto-Indo-European *-lós suffix, with a preceding -ի- (-i-) vowel.
