Etymology
From Middle French coy, from Old French coi, from Latin qu(i)ētus. Doublet of quiet, which was borrowed.
The original feminine coie is attested until the 18th century. The modern form is analogous (e.g. with droit, droite) and/or influenced by the aforementioned doublet. Compare similar spelling inconsistencies in absous, andalou, esquimau, favori.
