[edit]Possibly from Proto-Turkic *yīr-, *yï̄r- (“to split lengthwise; to break, tear”), in which case a doublet of yırtmaq (“wear out; rend”). Compare with Crimean Tatar cırtmaq.
Alternatively, onomatopoeic.
