Vietnamese

Etymology

dấu (mark) +‎ sóng (wave), from the diacritical mark's resemblance to an ocean wave.

The Middle Vietnamese diacritic was derived from the Portuguese til (tilde) and has since fallen out of use.

Pronunciation

Noun

(classifier cái) dấu sóng

  1. (typography) swung dash; tilde (punctuation mark that indicates range)
  2. (typography, historical) apex (diacritic in Middle Vietnamese that indicates /ŋ͡m/)

Usage note

This diacritic is a homoglyph of dấu ngã and dấu mềm, which are also known in English as tilde based on their appearance.
