    "I think you told me that cocks were also used in the art of augury."
    "That is so, madam. Alectoromachy was continually practised in Rome. This consisted in taking a white cock deprived of its claws and setting it within a circle of grain beneath which the letters of the alphabet were hidden. The cock was allowed to peck at will and the letters it exposed were noted down.
