[edit]From Old Norse embætti, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją, cognate with Swedish ämbete, German Amt, Dutch ambacht, doublet of amt (“county”)). Derived from *ambahtaz (“servant”), which is an old loan from Gaulish ambaxtos (“vassal”).
