Etymology

[edit]

Verbal noun of perhaps of a lost Form II verb, *ħallaq, or the active participle of the existing Form I verb ħalaq (to create), however under the guise of form II active participles. Compare the Arabic خَالِق (creator), derived active participle of خَلَقَ (to create). Hence the expected form would be *ħaleq or *ħieleq, if it were to be derived directly from ħalaq.
