[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀡𑀺𑀯𑀸𑀭𑀬 (ṇivāraya), 𑀡𑀺𑀯𑀸𑀭𑀕 (ṇivāraga), from Sanskrit निवार (nivāra), निवारक (nivāraka). Related to Old Marathi 𑘡𑘲𑘪𑘰𑘨𑘜𑘹 (nīvāraṇe, “to protect; to ward off (evil); to refute, to deny; to stop”). Compare Sinhalese නියර (niyara), නෙර (nera).
