Etymology

From a part of man'yōgana 衣; first attested c. 828. Became obsolete for representing e in the mid-Heian period when e merged with ye in spoken Japanese, being displaced by the エ kana formerly used for ye; later resurrected by linguists in the Edo period for representation of Old and Early Classical Japanese.

Syllable

𛀀 • (e) 

1. A special form of the katakana syllable "e", used when it is distinguished from Old Japanese "ye".
