The 1931 Arizona State Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented Arizona State Teachers College (later renamed Arizona State University) in the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association (BIAA) during the 1931 college football season. In their second season under head coach Ted Shipkey, the Bulldogs compiled a 6–2 record (2-2 against BIAA opponents), won the BIAA championship, and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 169 to 66.[2][3] Arizona State's team captain was FB Horace Smitheran.[4] The Bulldogs finished (4-1) at home and (2-1) on the road. All home games were played at Irish Field in Tempe, Arizona.

Season Summary

In the season opener, Arizona State Teacher's College delivered a 66-0 home shutout win against the Sacaton Indians. The Bulldogs dropped a 27-13 road game at Texas-El Paso. ASTC defeated New Mexico State 25-7 at Irish Field. The Bulldogs recorded a 20-6 road victory against NAU. During the rivalry matchup in Tempe, Arizona State Teacher's College beat Arizona 19-6. The Bulldogs earned a 7-0 road shutout win over Fresno State. ASTC fell to NAU 13-7 at Irish Field. The Bulldogs closed the season by defeating the Arizona All-Stars 13-7 in Tempe.

The usual Arizona State Teacher's College offensive lineup included: (LE Dick Wilburn, LT Cecil McCullar, LG Earl McCullar, C Reid Calicoat, RG Paul Griffin, RT Don Pace, QB Curley Blount, RE Bob Smith, HB Norris Steverson, FB Horace Smitheran, & HB William Baxter). Bob Adams, Guideo Cislaghi, & Anson Cooper were also on roster.

Team Statistical Leaders & Awards

HB Norris Steverson earned AP All-American Honorable Mention honors for the 1931 football season.

RG Paul Griffin, HB Norris Steverson, and LE Dick Wilburn earned All-Southern Conference honors for the 1931 campaign.
