2010 Summer Youth Olympics
The 2010 Youth Olympic Games (officially known as Ist Youth Olympic Games) is a major international sports and cultural festival to be celebrated in the tradition of the Youth Olympic Games during the Summer of 2010.
Bid process
Cities interested in hosting the inaugural summer games in 2010 had to have their applications confirmed by their respective National Olympic Committees and submitted to the IOC by August 31 2007. On September 3, the following cities were confirmed as official applicants by the IOC:[1] They later were acknowledged as completing the questionnaire due October 26. A short list was announced on November 19.[2]
- Athens --Host of the 1896 Summer Olympics the 2004 Summer Olympics and seven IOC Sessions. As stated on their website, Athens is eager to host the Games not only to utilize their state of the art venues, but to establish the Youth Olympics in the "birthplace" of the Modern and Ancient Games.[3]
- Bangkok --To be held at Thammasat University’s campus in Rangsit where the 1998 Asian Games and the 2007 Summer Universiade were held. Scheduled between August 8 and 20, 2010.[4]
- Debrecen--Debrecen is boasting of its compact plan. 95% of venues are within walking distance. Over 3,000 free bikes will be available in the “Green bike” program.[5] Debrecen has hosted 12 major sporting events in the past seven years, and also has a high percentage of youth because of the university population.[6]
- Guatemala City --Host of one IOC Session. Guatemala City is the only candidate from the Americas.
- Kuala Lumpur
- Moscow --Host of the 1980 Summer Olympics and three IOC Sessions. Russia is aggressively campaigning for the games with its prior Olympic history and recent win with the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. President Vladimir Putin is again showing a high profile in support of the games. [7] Moscow is planning a "Web University" to enhance interaction and awareness of traditions from all cultures of the world.[8]
- Poznan
- Singapore --Host of one IOC session. Singapore plans to use the National University of Singapore’s University Town for a high tech Youth Olympic Village. Jurong West Sports and Recreation Centre will also feature prominently in the games. Students are collecting 1,000,000 signatures in support of the games.[9]
- Turin --Host of the 2006 Winter Olympics and one IOC Session.
An evaluation committee will visit the shortlisted cities in December, if necessary, before the IOC elects the host in February 2008.[10]
