Mohawk Airlines Flight 411 was a scheduled domestic passneger service operated by Mohawk Airlines, inc. between Albany, NY and Glens Falls, NY. On November 19 1969 it crashed into Pilot Knob Mountain, killing all 14 passengers and crew on board.

History of Flight

Flight 411 was cleared for aproach to runway 19 VOR. During the aproach, the aircraft, a Fairchild FH-227B, hit trees on the Northwest slope of the Pilot Knob Mountain, then impacted a rock cliff from which it fell 34 feet and became lodged between trees and caught fire. Of the 11 passengers and 3 crew on board, there were no survivors.

Investigation

The accident was investigated by the NTSB. The results of that investigation are as follows:

The crash was caused because of the route the pilot took. He flew the plane into the "lee of the mountain downdraft" at insuficiant altitude for recovery. As a result he was unable to maintain adequate control, and the plane made an uncontrolled descent into the mountainside.
