History of Flight
Flight 411 was cleared for aproach to runway 19 VOR. During the aproach, the aircraft, a Fairchild FH-227B, hit trees on the Northwest slope of the Pilot Knob Mountain, then impacted a rock cliff from which it fell 34 feet and became lodged between trees and caught fire. Of the 11 passengers and 3 crew on board, there were no survivors.
Investigation
The accident was investigated by the NTSB. The results of that investigation are as follows:
The crash was caused because of the route the pilot took. He flew the plane into the "lee of the mountain downdraft" at insuficiant altitude for recovery. As a result he was unable to maintain adequate control, and the plane made an uncontrolled descent into the mountainside.
