Tampere Deck Arena (Finnish: Tampereen Kannen areena), also known as Tampere Central Arena (Finnish: Tampereen Keskusareena) and formerly known commercially as Nokia Arena,[1][2] is an indoor arena in Tampere in Finland that is currently under construction. It is planned to replace the old Tampere Ice Stadium. It will host ice hockey games and will be the home of Ilves and Tappara of the SM-liiga. The project was approved by the City Council of Tampere on May 19, 2010.[3]

Background

Tampere Deck in August 2021

After delays, the arena and the adjacent commercial/residential skyscraper development got a final approval and construction began in January 2018. The final plan calls for a deck to be built over the existing railway connections. This deck will have the multi-purpose arena (at least 13,455 seats[4]), offices, commercial development, housing, hotel and casino. The overall vision was designed by Daniel Libeskind. The arena is expected to be complete by December 2021,[5] in time for the 2022 IIHF World Championship. The rest of the development is to be completed by 2024.[6] Casino Tampere will also open in connection with the arena,[7][8] and according to preliminary plans, the casino will employ about 80 people.[9] Lapland Hotels [fi] will open a luxury hotel next to the arena in 2021.[10][11]

In March 2020, it was announced that, under a ten-year sponsorship agreement with the UROS Group in Oulu, the arena will be called UROS LIVE.[12] The naming caused a small scale scandal due to name's overly masculine tone.[13][14] The agreement was terminated on October 28, 2021 due to Uros Oy's financial problems, and the name of the arena was changed as a result.[15] Nokia Corporation was chosen as the new sponsor on November 19, 2021, and the arena was renamed as Nokia Arena.[1][2]

The first scheduled events in the arena are the local matches of the Finnish Championship League on 3 and 4 December 2021. The official opening will be celebrated on 15 December.[16]
