On 6 June 2024, Israeli forces struck a UNRWA school in the Nuseirat refugee camp, killing 40–45 people, including 14 children and nine women, and injuring dozens more.[1][2][3][4] US munitions were used in the attack.[5]

Event

On 6 June 2024, The Israeli forces targeted the classrooms on the highest floor of the Al-Sardi school in the Nuseirat refugee camp with two missiles by a warplane.[1] The strike was carried out in the early hours of Thursday after the army declared new ground and airstrikes on several refugee camps in central Gaza.[6] UNRWA said 6,000 Palestinian refugees were sheltering in the school at the time of the attack.[7] Since the start of the war, more than 180 UN agency buildings have been hit and more than 450 displaced people have been killed in those facilities.[8]

The Israeli forces claimed it was a "precision strike on Hamas compound" at the school, without providing evidence, killing about 20 to 30 fighters it believed were inside. Peter Lerner, The Israel Defense Forces Spokesman, said that it was not aware of any civilian casualties in this attack.[9] Ismail Al-Thawabta, Director General of the Government Media Office, denied Israel's claim, and said to Reuters: "The occupiers false fake stories to justify the brutal crime they committed against dozens of displaced people."[7]

Reactions

UN chief Antonio Guterres condemned the massacre, saying that "UN premises are inviolable". The US called for Israel to show full "transparency" about the incident.[5]
