Andy Kanavan was an English session musician and drummer, most famous for his work with post punk bands Level 9, Foreign Playground and German band Styffe. He is recognized as a very capable drummer, as showcased in concerts such as Larks in the Park and accompanied Echo and the Bunnymen to 1979. He was also a member of Mellow Yellow, a Blues and Soul Band. As a session musician Kanavan played for Decca, Polydor and indie label Sabre. Kanavan also played live drums for Dream Cast on a European tour and also when von Schirach played/toured with The Locust. Born in Accrington, Kanavan soon built up a reputation for his aggresive style of drumming. Often falling into bouts of depression Kanavan would fail to show at concerts and was soon dropped by mainstream record labels and bands. It wasn't until his rumoured attempted suicide following the death of his girl friend that his mental health issues became apparent. It was speculated that he drove his motorcycle head on into a church wall while drunk at 60mph. Now detached from the lime light Kanavan has all but retired from the music industry and now teaches.
