The Thailand-Burma railway was nicknamed the Death Railway becuase of the human cost of its construction by the Axis powers during World War II. About a hundred thousand conscripted Asian labourers and 16,000 Allied prisoners of war died on the project.

The film The Bridge on the River Kwai is based on a true event during the railway's construction.
