Bandaru Dattatreya (often called Dattanna, born 26 February 1947) is an Indian politician from the Telangana. He is currently the Minister of Labour and Employment in the Narendra Modi Government. He was the president of the United Andhra Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). He has been elected as a member of parliament for 10th, 12th, 13th Lok Sabhas (1991-2004) from Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency and was a Union Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government. He was re-elected to 16th Lok Sabha from Secunderabad Constituency. He is a BJP National Vice-President and a Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) in charge of Labour and Employment.[1] Dattatreya belongs to a lower caste and comes from a modest background.[2] [3]

In 2016, Dattatreya was accused of being responsible for the suicide of University of Hyderabad PhD research scholar Rohith Vemula, who killed himself on January 17, 2016. Vemula and 4 other students from Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) were involved in a protest against the execution of Yakub Memon, organizing beef fests in university, which led to their clash with some ABVP members and subsequent suspension after inquiry Committee constituted by Professor R.P Sharma, former Vice-Chancellor of Hyderabad University found that "Based on the Medical officer report (explained by Dr. Anupama), main complainant Susheel Kumar’s deposition and pictures by him and the depositions of two eyewitnesses (names are kept confidential) of the incident, it was evidently cleared that Mr.Susheel Kumar was abused, manhandled, beaten, forced to write apology letter by a group of more than 30 students, lead by Prashant. The main and most active students involved and named by the complainant and mostly confirmed by eyewitnesses, in abusing and hitting are Prashant, Rohit, Seshu, Vijay and Sunkanna" [4]. Dattatreya had written a letter to the Education Minister Smriti Irani, complaining that the student politics at the university was becoming "casteist, extremist and anti-national". Students protesting against Vemula's death claimed that Dattatrey's letter had led to the suspension of Vemula and his friends.[5] [6] >
