Banque populaire V

Banque Populaire V , fifth sailboat of the Team Banque Populaire[1], is a trimaran designed to beat the most important oceanic records. It was launched the 4th of october 2008 in Nantes (FRA).

With its 40m lenght (131ft) it is, at the moment, the largest racing trimaran in the world.

Its skipper, Pascal Bidégorry, entrered the Team Banque Populaire in 2004.

Its sponsor is the french bank Banque Populaire.

History

The architectural project started in 2006. The architects VPLP [2](Van Peteghem-Lauriot Prévost) designed this G-Class maxi multihull. The trimaran was built by the CDK Technologies[3] shipyard in Lorient.

It was launched at the end of august 2008 in Lorient for its first tests.

In 2009, it makes its first attempt across the northern Atlantic from west to east. On sunday the 2nd of august 2009 tha maxi-trimaran establishes the new record in 3 days, 15 hours, 25 minutes ans 48 seconds (an average speed of 32.94 knots), beating the previous record, holded by Franck Cammas on Groupama 3, by more than 12 hours. During the way it beated also twice the 24 hour distance first with 880, then, several hours later, with 907 nautical miles.

Since november 2009, it stays in Brest, expecting a good opportunity for an attempt to beat the Jules Verne Trophy record (circumnavigation of the world), currently holded, since 2005, by Bruno Peyron and its maxi-catamaran Orange II.
