"Blown Away"
Song

"Blown Away" is a song written by Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear and recorded by the American country recording artist Carrie Underwood. It was released as the second single from Underwood's fourth studio album, Blown Away.

Underwood performed the song on the Top 5 result show of American Idol season 11, at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards and on the 2012 edition of the Country Music Association Awards. The song has been nominated for a 2013 Grammy Award for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song.

Content

"Blown Away" speaks of a female and her revenge towards her abusive father by failing to help him into shelter when a tornado arrives.[2] The song is in A minor with an approximate tempo of 134 beats per minute and a main chord pattern of Am-C-G.[3]

Chris Tompkins wrote the song with Josh Kear, with whom he also wrote Underwood's "Before He Cheats". Tompkins came up with the idea of using a storm as an image after playing various sound effects on his keyboard, one of which was a thunderclap. They originally did not have an idea as to where they would take the song, until Kear asked why the song's protagonist would be angry.[4]

Critical reception

The song received critical acclaim from music critics. It received a five-star rating from Billy Dukes of Taste of Country, who called it "dangerous, but irresistible." He also praised Underwood for recording darker material than her previous singles.[5] Also giving it five stars, Bobby Peacock of Roughstock called it "more grandiose" than Underwood's previous efforts, also saying that it "makes itself known by sounding like absolutely nothing else on radio."[6] Brian Mansfield of USA Today said that the song's "synthesizers, strings sounds, vocal overdubs and echoing guitars combine dramatically to give Blown Away a neo-80s feel - think an Oklahoma version of the Eurythmics."[7] Giving it a "thumbs up", Blake Boldt of Engine 145 praised the lyrics as "a reminder of the best storytelling that Nashville can offer", although he criticized the production for being too slick.[8]

Music video

A San Antonio radio station won a national contest to privately premiere the video, an event that will be attended by Underwood and the video's director, Randee St. Nicholas.[9] The music video premiered publicly on July 30, 2012 on E! Online, as confirmed by Underwood via her official Facebook page.

The video begins with Underwood wiping her hands and getting a drink before sitting down to do History homework. Her father is already a little drunk, and asks her if he could help her with her homework, claiming that he used to be really good at History. Even though Underwood refuses her father's help, he continues pushing it until she decides to leave. It starts to irritate him to the point that he grasps her arm and shouts, "Hey! I am your father young lady!"

The scene changes to Underwood staring at storm clouds before singing. She is seen walking through a grave yard where her mother is buried and running home with the twister on the horizon. Her father is passed out on the couch and she cannot wake him up. While trying to figure out what to do, Underwood starts to think of the past and the times her father lets his drunkenness and anger out of hand. She then decides to head to the cellar alone, leaving her father sleeping on the couch. The video continues to flash back and forth between her father in the past, the rain and branches on him in the house, and Underwood singing in the cellar. Towards the end of the last chorus, the house starts to shake and fades to black, leading to Underwood coming out of the cellar to bright sunshine. There is a puppy running around Underwood's red boots, referring to the Wizard of Oz, while she's singing the last lyrics of the song. The house is gone in the horizon.

Chart performance

Prior to its official release as the second single, the song peaked at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 49 on the Hot Country Songs chart. It debuted at number 30 on the Hot Country Songs chart after impacting country radio, eventually peaking at number two for two weeks. The song peaked at number 155 in the UK due to digital downloads from the album, marking Underwood's first song to chart there. As of January 3, the single has sold 1,695,000 copies.[10] The song reached number one on the U.S Country Airplay chart, remaining at the top of the chart for two weeks in October 2012. Carrie is the only female artist in 2012 to spend 3 weeks atop the Country Airplay charts.[11][12]
