""Cyriac Roeding"" (born March 26, 1973) is a German-born entrepreneur mainly active in Silicon Valley. He is a former EVP of CBS (NYSE: CBS), where he started the mobile division, and then became an entrepreneur-in-residence at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers [1] . He is currently the co-founder and CEO of shopkick, a mobile shopping application, which as of February 2012 had 3 million active users in the U.S. and partners with Target, Macy’s, Best Buy, Old Navy, Crate & Barrel, Toys R Us, Procter & Gamble and Disney [2] .

Early Years & Education

Roeding was born in Constance, Germany, and grew up in a small village north of Frankfurt, Germany. His dad was a physicist and his mom worked with under privileged children. Roeding went to high school in Texas[3] .

He sold his first computer program to a local newspaper at the age of 15. Roeding then became a programmer for HP, while still in high school. He went on to college in Germany and in Tokyo [4].

Roeding received a master’s degree summa cum laude in engineering and business administration from Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology while working for Hewlett Packard. In 1994, he went to Tokyo to study Japanese management at Sophia University, and there first became exposed to mobile phones that had just become available in Japan.

Career

After college, Roeding joined McKinsey and Company in Munich (link to No. 1). He later founded a mobile marketing firm called 12snap, which won the first Lion Awards for mobile in Cannes.(link ?) Roeding left to build CBS Mobile, where his interactive entertainment concepts won an Emmy Award nomination. In 2008, he traveled the world for nearly two months to learn how mobile is used across cultures (link to No. 2). When Roeding returned he spent a year at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence to identify next-generation cross-platform mobile and online venture concepts (link to No. 4 below). In 2009, he founded shopkick, a company that allows retailers to reward customers with promotions upon entering an establishment (link to reference No. 1)

Accomplishments

Roeding has received several industry honors, including the first Lion Awards for mobile concepts at the Cannes Lion Festival in France (in 2003 and 2004). In 2007 and 2008, he and his team received the only Emmy Award nominations for Mobile. (link to No. 3.)
