Self-taught artists are artists who did not receive formal training in the visual arts, or whose formal training did not influence their artistic practice. Self-taught artists may or may not work as professional artists in the mainstream art world. Self-taught artists as a group do not necessarily belong to one particular movement or genre. Outsider artists and "naïve artists" tend to be self-taught, but not all self-taught artists can be accurately described by those terms. Likewise, while some folk artists may be self-taught, many folk artists receive training in their craft through apprenticeships or other community-based instruction and may not be considered self-taught.
