The 1880 Australia v England series was at the time considered to be a first-class cricket tour of Australia, by a combined team from the England. The tourists were led by Alfred Shaw. The four matches between Australia and the English tourists were later classified as Test matches. The English tourists also played three other first class cricket matches. For details of thos matches, see the England cricket team in Australia in 1881-82.

The first time an English team had toured Australia in 1877, the 2 test series had been drawn 1-1. However when the English team returned for the 1879 Australia v England series, the hosts won the one off match. Alfred Shaw's tourists were confident of an English victory following their win at home in the 1880 Australia v England series.

Despite the Australia v England matches subsequently having received Test status, the matches are not considered to be part of The Ashes since the series precedes the introduction of the trophy.
