Introduction

A flannel vest is a garment, usually worn instead of an overcoat. The origin of the word is uncertain, but a Welsh origin has been suggested as fabric similar to flannel can be traced back to the UK, where it was well known as early as the 16th century.

The re-emergence of the garment as a counter-cultural statment in the 1990's, was spear-headed by such grunge luminaries as Nirvana .

Uses

Since the inception of the flannel vest, the garment has been praised for its heat retention properties, this is a major contributing factor to its popularity.

Context and Controversy

Historically, flannel vests were regarded as a status symbol in some regions of United States, Canada, and the Soviet Union, particularly in rural communities.
