Rutland County is a county located in the U.S. State of Vermont. As of 2000, the population is 63,400.

Geography

The county has a total area of 2,447 km2 (945 mi2). 2,415 km2 (933 mi2) of it is land and 32 km2 (12 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.30% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 63,400 people, 25,678 households, and 16,742 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km2 (68/mi2). There are 32,311 housing units at an average density of 13 persons/km2 (35 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 98.13% White, 0.33% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 25,678 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.30% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 34.80% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,743, and the median income for a family is $44,742. Males have a median income of $31,094 versus $23,964 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,874. 10.90% of the population and 7.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.30% are under the age of 18 and 8.80% are 65 or older.
