Star Academy Arab World, also known as Star Academy: Al-Academya (Arabic: الأكاديمية) or Star Academy LBC, is a pan-Arab televised talent show, which began in 2003 that features a group of young male and female candidates from all over the Arab world. The show became a huge success instantly and a must-watch event everyday for its fans. It is the Arabic adaptation of the French television show Star Academy, which is produced by Endemol. Star Academy Arab World is produced by Netherlands company Endemol, Vanilla Productions & PAC Ltd.. The show is based on the Spanish format called Operación Triunfo.
The show basically revolves over 16–21 contestants that go live in an isolated penthouse apartment for 4 months, with one of the contestants getting eliminated every week through a nomination process. The contestants get to showcase their talents in a weekly concert in which the contestants get to perform on stage with various designs, dancers, solo performances, acapella on piano and sharing the stage with the most popular singers in the Arab World.
One of the show's highlights are the appearances of some of the Arab World's most important performers such as Diana Haddad, Haifa Wahbe, Elissa, Angham, Asalah, Ramy Ayach, Myriam Fares, Kazem Al Saher, Nawal Al-Zoghbi, Najwa Karam, Wael Kfoury, Sherine, Fares Karam, Abdallah Al Rowaished and many more. The show has also been for its reinvention and continuous changes, just as, as of its third season, the show witnessed guests from international superstars such as Julio Iglesias, Anggun, Karl Wolf, Tina Arena, Chris De Burgh and Massari.
LBC renewed Star Academy for a Season 8; it was officially launched on April 1st 2011, gathering 20 contestants from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait & Lebanon the host country.
Overview
Based in Adma north of Beirut, Lebanon, the show is aired for 3 months on the Lebanese TV station LBC. It is hosted by Hilda Khalife. The show concept consists of an academy and candidates / students, where it is also a talent competition to introduce a new artist among the candidates. Talents are not restricted to singing only, but for acting and dancing as well.
It is divided into two formats: each day a program presents moments of the everyday life and training of the candidates (what they are called), and a prime show every Friday evening, which is live. In addition an affiliate TV station films them 24/7.
The concept of the show is training the students in several disciplines: singing, acting, vocalizing, theatre expression, dancing, and musical culture. Then, each week (on Tuesdays) the three weakest students are nominated. The nomination is done by the teaching staff after the candidates undergo an evaluation test the day before (Monday). At the end of the week (Friday), a special live show called the "Prime" is broadcasted. During the prime show, the candidates perform and sing either by themselves or with guest artists. The 3 nominated candidates' initial voting is through the public; done by either phone calls and/or text messages. The one with the highest percentage of votes returns back. The remaining two candidates are then voted on by their fellow candidates, and the one with the most votes remains. The remaining candidate then leaves the academy. When the overall number of candidates is reduced, the nomination by the professors comes down to two students. By this point, it's completely up to the public to vote who is in and who gets out, as the remaining candidates do not vote.
The show proved to be immensely popular. As the LBC station also provides satellite connections to the majority of the Arab countries and to Lebanese and/or Arab communities throughout the world, it became one of the most popular shows in the Arab-speaking world. LBC, the network airing the show, reaped huge profits from the show (but have been unable to replicate the show's success with other reality based programming).
The show received intense criticism when it started off, which led some people to speculate that it would not succeed.[citation needed]
This debate also caused the indefinite postponing of West Asian edition of Big Brother, otherwise known as Big Brother – Al Raiss.

Hisham, from Saudi Arabia, was declared the winner this year, although he was not the favorite. Most felt Amani or Zizi were the better performer overall. Many also felt this year was a step-down in the quality of students from the previous year, with only Amani, Zizi, and Ahmed H being deemed good singers.

Joseph Attieh, who is a radio and TV production student received a trophy, $50,000 in cash and a brand new 2006 car. He was 19 years old and the first Lebanese who won the Title. This year was seen as an improvement over the previous year, and return to the quality of the first season, with many talented students. Some, like Hani, Hanaa, and Shayma were deemed just as worthy of winning as Joseph. There were also many other strong performers, like Fadi, Khalifa, Rakiya, Maya, and Wajdi.
This year the show expanded the number of students. The previous 2 years had 16 contestants; starting this year, 19 students were chosen to participate.

Joseph, Hani, Hanaa, Chayma, Fady, Khalifa, Maya, Rakiya and Wajdi were chosen to be part of the tour. This was the first year 9 students, not 8, went on tour. It was also the first time the Top finishing students did not all go on tour. Rym and Mohammed I despite finishing 8th and 9th, respectively, were not chosen for the tour; instead, Rakiya and Wajdi were selected to go on tour instead.
Star Academy 4
Shatha Hassoun, from Iraq, made history as the first (and to date, only) girl to take the title, as well as the first Iraqi to do so. Her success was a juicy subject for worldwide press, and she was credited for uniting her country, Iraq, over a happy event despite war.
This season was also the first season that two girls claimed first and second place when Shatha Hassoun came in first, and Marwa (from Tunisia) came in second. It was also noteworthy to feature the first female contestant from the Persian Gulf, Shoroq (from Bahrain), as well as the first contestant from Oman, Ayoub.

Star Academy 5
The fifth season of Star Academy began on 25 January 2008. There were several new changes in the academy that included a new swimming pool, a basketball court, a trampoline, a billiard table, a table-tennis table and a newly decorated building. New lessons were added this season including swimming lessons, basketball lessons and music lessons. Another change was the increase in the number of students, now 20 from the previous 2 season's having 19.
The final prime of Star Academy 5, held on 23 May 2008, witnessed the crowning of Nader Quirat, the first from Tunis and the Maghreb region.
His victory was somewhat controversial, as Nader Quirat is the first winner of the program to sing primarily in non-Arabic languages (English, French, Spanish, Italian etc.). Although he did sing in Arabic on various occasions, many felt it was not up to the standards of the other contestants and not worthy of a variety show that is primarily in Arabic. Nader is also the first winner to have been a nominee and was not saved by the public, as he had received a low percentage of votes.

Controversy
Despite Star Academy's popularity in the Arab World, it created lots of contrversy among Islamic hard liners and conservatives who accused LBC of promoting Western values by encouraging youths to engage in premarital relationships while living in the same house. The program underwent harsh criticism for being commercial by profting from the audience's voting for the nominees especially from certain countries that are known for their strong votes via telephone and S.M.S. due to the huge masses and the wealth of voters, these countries include GCC States, Egypt and Algeria. However, many viewers expressed their anger when the results were being changed or inaccurate as in the case of Joseph Attiyah who won over Hani Hussein whose fellow Egyptians voted for free, and yet his percentage was lower than Joseph's as the Lebanese people do not always vote due to financial difficulties and their population is lesser.
Roula Saad and her staff were always accused of being biased in favor of the Lebanese candidates, mostly Maronite Christians, and continue to nominate non-Lebanese candidates every week in order to eliminate the presence of Saudi, Kuwaiti, Egyptian and Moroccan candidates so they would not reach the finals due to the high percentages they receive from their fans. In Season 7, many fans sympathized with Tahra Hmamish whom they saw as a victim because of her popularity and that the teachers did not appreciate her talent which prompted them to nominate her seven times, and she would always win by getting the highest percentage from her native Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, etc. Many blamed the program for using Tahra to milk money from votes.
Former Star Academy candidates accused Roula Saad, the teachers and other staff members for practicing discrimination by giving more songs to students who are favorites, more camera time to those who create more drama or those who are involved in serious relationships with the opposite sex inside or outside the academy. In Season 6, Tania (Lebanon) was the weakest female student but remained in the program (just two weeks before the finals) because she and Michel Azzi were a couple. In most web forums and blogs, viewers were angered and disgusted by Michel and Tania's relationship in which the administration focused on their pointless arguments and indecent behavior on public television, others blamed Tania for taking the places of candidates who were more talented than her such as Aya, Diala and Khawla.
Another point to take note of is the absence of black Arabs in the show after Moroccan student Hanane Asfoura of season 2, which further prompted viewers and bloggers alike to denounce Star Academy as not only prejudice against Maghreb Arabs but also as being racist. Viewers also expressed their disgust at Khaleeji students (mostly from Saudi Arabia), whom they often suspected of "buying the votes" (as with the case of Abdul Aziz of Season 6 and Hisham of Season 2) as they come from wealthy families. Also bloggers believed that Amani was the rightful winner of Season 2 and Bassma of Season 6 respectively.
Kuwait was one of the first countries to ban the Star Academy tour after members of the Kuwaiti Parliament denounced the program and blamed it for corrupting teenagers and youths.
