The Battle of Garni (52-53) was a conflict between the Armenian king Mithridates and his nephew Rhadamistus, the son of Pharsmanes I, the king of Kartli. It took place in the years 52-53. Pharsmanes I, who was concerned that Rhadamistus might not succeed in ruling, encouraged his son to seize control of his uncle Mithridates' kingdom. Rhadamistus invaded Armenia with the Iberian army and besieged the fortress of Garni, where Mithridates and the Roman detachment accompanying him were trapped. The Roman commander, Prefect Celius Pilon, who had been bribed by Rhadamistus, deceived Mithridates into surrendering to his nephew. Although Rhadamistus had promised safety to his uncle, he ordered the execution of Mithridates and his sons. Rhadamistus briefly ruled as the king of Armenia.[1]
