Solar Entertainment Corporation (SEC) is a Filipino-owned media company based in Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City, Philippines. A wholly owned subsidiary of the Tieng family (Under the Wilson, William & Willy Tieng brothers), Ramon S. Ang and several private stockholders. 9 cable channels[2] and a film distribution company. The film distribution unit is the local affiliate for United International Pictures.

It owns and operates the 2 television networks ETC. It also owns the 50% majority share of the former minor media giant Southern Broadcasting Network (SBN) and 2nd Avenue. It also owns and affiliate with Rajah Broadcasting Network (RJTV).

The company was founded in 1976 when it started as Solar Films.

History

As a TV moviemaking

Solar Entertainment Corporation (‘Solar’) was established by William Tieng, Wilson Tieng, and Willy Tieng in 1976.

As a film distribution

Solar Films is formed in 1988, bringing international films to the Philippines. Since 2012 Solar has collaborated with Independent film director Brillante Mendoza for a multiple film contract.[3]

As a TV channels

In the year 2000, DOMSAT became a subsidiary of Solar Entertainment Corporation (Solar). As its subsidiary, DOMSAT’s teleport is being used by Solar to produce, originate, and distribute its various television program services. Its full service digital broadcast teleport features server technology in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Sumulong Highway, Antipolo City, Rizal. It is built around two encoder platforms, Scientific Atlanta Power Vu Classic (DVB) and Motorola Digicipher II (MPEG-@). Program origination is done on a SeaChange Media Cluster Server System. The facility includes a 500 square meter studio and various linear and non-linear production bays.[1]

As a broadcast company

On January 1, 2008, Solar Entertainment Corporation began to lease block airtime with various 1 VHF and 2 UHF terrestrial networks, RPN, SBN and RJTV has started carrying shows from Solar's C/S the channel became C/S and is now being both on as a cable channel and as a free TV channel through RPN. (later C/S 9) RPN but will remain as Solar Television Network (now Nine Media Corporation), a corporate brand of television arm subsidiary of Solar as 9TV (now a subsidiary of ALC Group of Companies since August 23, 2014). ETC and 2nd Avenue. On January 1, 2008 as a separate channel. As part of the Solar network’s block-time agreements with various terrestrial channels, ETC and 2nd Avenue started airing over SBN 21 and RJTV 29, a terrestrial UHF TV station and regional stations.

On November 29, 2009, Solar Entertainment Corporation launches as Solar TV at 11:00am with a slogan It's A Bright New World on RPN. On October 31, 2010, it changed some of its programming content to English/Tagalog with a new slogan Kung Saan Lahat Panalo!. It ended its broadcast on February 25, 2011

On March 2, 2011,[4]ETC had moved to RPN and then to create the news channel was first known as TalkTV from March 2, 2011 over SBN. TalkTV is formed by the Solar Television Network (now Nine Media Corporation), by-then owned by Solar Entertainment Corporation after the latter lead the privatization of former state-sequestered Radio Philippines Network (RPN) in 2011. The first programs that aired on the channel are Dateline NBC, Today Show, Today's Talk, NBC Nightly News, Inside Edition, Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Show with David Letterman. After Solar Entertainment Corporation acquired 34 percent of Radio Philippines Network from the Philippine government as part of RPN/IBC privatization in 2011, Solar TV finally ventured into news at the end of 2011. Most of its news personalities are from ABS-CBN and ANC and also from RPN which was partially purchased by Solar Entertainment.[5]

On May 31, 2011, ETC with a slogan Young and Loving It over RPN. ETC includes for reality series for The Rachel Zoe Project and Bachelor Pad for drama series for Nikita, The Secret Circle, US hit reality series of The Glee Project, comedy show New Girl and 2 Broke Girls local lifestyle show for Etcetera (season 1 and later to season 2). In 2012, ETC includes for reality show American Idol, for local programs Project Runway Philippines (season 3), for drama series for The Lying Game, Emily Owens MD and Beauty and the Beast, local infotainment show for ETC HQ. In 2013, ETC's comedy-drama series for The Carrie Diaries, sitcom series for Super Fun Night, supernatural drama series for Ravenswood, horror fantasy drama series for The Originals and among others.

Solar News, known for its back-to-basics and unbiased journalism was formed in January 2012 during the coverage of the Impeachment Trial of former Chief Justice Renato Corona. Post-EDSA revolution ABS-CBN newsmen Pal Marquez, Jing Magsaysay and Pia Hontiveros together with former ANC anchors Claire Celdran, Mai Rodriguez and Nancy Irlanda known as the pillars of Solar News. Reportorial team then was composed by former reporters of RPN NewsWatch, the sole and longest running English newscast of Radio Philippines Network, which was stopped airing in 2012 as an effect of RPN's privatization.[6][7]

In July 16, 2012, Solar News launches its first local newscast Solar Network News (now known as Network News) followed by Solar Nightly News (now known as Nightly News), An hourly news update called Solar News Update (later on called Solar Headlines and on August 25, 2014, it was now known as Headlines), Solar Newsday (now known as Newsday) and Solar Daybreak (now known as Daybreak).

On October 30, 2012, Solar Entertainment Corporation dubbed then as the "First 24/7 All-English News Channel on Free TV", Solar News Channel (SNC) replaces TalkTV. SNC was launched at 5:45am on Channel 21 via SBN. A sports news called Solar Sports Desk (now known as Sports Desk). Solar News and Current affairs evening block first aired in November 2012 composing of 5 public affairs programs on Legal HD, MedTalk, News.PH, Opposing Views, Elections 2013 and News Cafe, 60 Minutes, Top Gear, Undercover Boss and the "Stories" Documentaries block was also launched during the SNC's time. SNC launched its own mobile application for smartphone users. Its consists of features such as live streaming, catch-up episodes (newscasts and Stories) and latest news from the network's website, solarnews.ph. In January 2013, Solar News Cebuano (now known as Cebuano News) starts as its make history as the first Cebuano TV newscast that aired on an English language news channel.[8]

On May 22, 2013, Solar Entertainment Corporation recently appointed two officers to manage its broadcasting and cable businesses. Joining Solar’s top management are Mr. Manuel “Meckoy” Quiogue as Chief Commercial Officer and Ms. Maria Theresa “Mitos” Borromeo as Chief Operating Officer.[9]

On November 2013, San Miguel Corporation President and COO Ramon S. Ang[10][11] personally acquired the minority stake of Solar Entertainment Corporation. Tiengs was the majority stockholder then of SEC. Solar News Channel and its partnership (now 9TV) moved to RPN 9 while ETC returned to this network. RPN's former occupant and SNC's affiliate ETC transferred to their former home SBN Channel 21 (ETC was aired in SBN-21 from 2008-2011 then at RPN-9 from 2011-2013).[12]

In 2015, Solar Entertainment Corporation announcement among all for U.S TV programs as #1stonPHTV of Solar channels for ETC, 2nd Avenue, Jack TV, Jack City and My Movie Channel.

On January 6, 2015, all SEC channels broadcasts the first-run foreign television programs with the hashtag #1stonPHTV, it means "First on Philippine TV" formerly known as the "Match Airing" (ETC), "Playing 1st" (Jack TV), "The Newest in the US" & "FastCast" (2nd Avenue) and "See It First" (Jack City).

From SkyCable to Terrestrial Television

Solar's channels have ceased airing on SkyCable, the Philippines' largest cable television provider. An insider claims that these troubles with SkyCable started when boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, whose fights Solar Entertainment has the exclusive right to air and distribute to, moved from ABS-CBN, the flagship television network of ABS-CBN Corporation and the primary owner of Sky Cable Corporation, to rival GMA Network.[citation needed] Another insider claims that SkyCable wanted to remove ETC and JackTV to make room for their own channels, Velvet and Maxxx.[citation needed] SkyCable wanted to retain C/S, 2nd Avenue, Solar Sports and Basketball TV, but Solar made a decision that they will only renew their contract if SkyCable carries all six channels. Thus, Solar decided to pull out all their channels rather than remove ETC and Jack TV.

However, Solar has inked a deal with local terrestrial channels TV5, RPN, SBN and RJTV for block-time programming. C/S, ETC and 2nd Avenue programming are seen on terrestrial TV channels RPN, SBN and RJTV, respectively, while NBA and WWE programming were seen on TV5, now moved to RPN.

Basketball TV, Solar Sports & C/S Origin (Now Solar TV) are now back on SkyCable for no additional fee. Jack TV is also scheduled to return to SkyCable effective October 1, 2010 replacing Maxxx.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao's boxing promotion, Top Rank, signed a non-guaranteed contract with ABS-CBN Sports to exclusively air fights promoted by Top Rank, with the exception of Pacquiao fights which are still signed exclusively through Solar Entertainment.

Dream Satellite TV

Dream Satellite TV ceased carrying three (3) Solar Channels namely, Solar Sports, ETC and 2nd Avenue (Except C/S 9) effective 1 February 2009. Dream's carriage contract with Solar Entertainment, which expired on 31 December 2008 was not renewed by Dream, citing financial constraints as its main reason. The three Solar channels were replaced by A&E's The History Channel, Biography Channel and Crime and Investigation Channel.
