Leiostomus xanthurus is the scientific name of a small saltwater fish commonly known as spot. The specie inhabits estuary and coastal waters from Massachusetts to Texas, and derives its name from the easily distinguishable dark spot behind each gill. Spot are frequently caught by recreational anglers and make excellent table fare.
