Map, please

Koafv, I'm putting back a request for a map that shows the location and extent of these archipelagoes. The current one shows Australasia's location in relation to Southeast Asia. //Big Adamsky 02:10, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The map is not clear where micronesia fits in to the world - I don't think the large map is the wole of the box on the inset.

-- Beardo 06:57, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed the inset box on the map. Kmusser 18:52, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commonality

The article badly needs a brief statement, early on, of why the concept was formed. In other words, what aspect(s) unites micronesia and distinguishes it from surrounding regions such as melanesia and polynesia? Culture, language, historic or ethnic origin...? Mglg 22:56, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More important than the FSM?

I don't see why the geographic region can be considered more important that the FSM. I think this ought to go to a disambiguation page. Doopmeister 03:21, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Asian or Aboriginal?

Are Micronesians considered Asian or Aboriginal? This is a serious question and I am not trying to offend people of either background. I ask because I know a fellow from this area and he said he is not asian. He said there is a word for his people but he couldn’t remember it at the time. I know Taiwan once and probably does still house a population of aboriginal people. (Ghostexorcist 12:27, 23 December 2006 (UTC))[reply]

I'd say neither, although the word aboriginal may mean different things in different countries. In general, aboriginal means the people indigenous to a country, but specifically and capitalised it means (to me) the people native to Australia, who are Melanesian. I understand it also refers to Taiwanese aborigines. The distant ancestors of Micronesians came from South East Asia, and possibly from Taiwan, but they have a distinct group of languages and a distinct culture. I'd say they are not Asian just as native Americans are not Asian, although they originally came from Asia too.
If you want more people to consider this question, try asking at the Humanities reference desk.-gadfium 18:00, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New article for Micronesians

Should a new article be made for Micronesians? There's one for Melanesians and Polynesians and it seems odd to me that there are articles for those two and not one for Micronesians.Blaylockjam10 (talk) 06:54, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

While this article is all about the geographical region, there are many incoming links that are either referring to the Federated States of Micronesia, or unclear. Does that reflect that the geographical region isn't primary enough to be the primary topic for the word 'Micronesia'? Jeffrey (147.8.202.204) (talk) 15:15, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your interpretation of many of the incoming links was challenged because it's subjective. While 'Federated States of Micronesia' (the country) may be accurate, it's not inaccurate to refer to the region instead in many cases. In order to change the primary topic of 'Micronesia', however, you'd need to establish that 'Micronesia' is the common name of the Federated States of Micronesia. It's certainly a widely used abbreviation but my analysis of sources shows that the full title is much more commonly used. As such, the country is at both its official and common name, leaving the title of Micronesia free to refer to the region. A dab page wouldn't be useful here, we already have a dab tag in the header of the page. NULL talk

Wrong incoming links don't exist only with disambiguation pages. It's just like links referring to the country Ireland (i.e. the ROI) but pointed incorrectly at [[Ireland]]. Jeffrey (202.189.98.142) (talk) 15:10, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Many of the links aren't 'wrong' though. Unclear links should not be changed unless evidence makes them clear (since the region of Micronesia is broader and fully encompasses the country of Micronesia), and links that are unambiguously intended to point to the country and not the region should be changed. In many cases the region is the desired target, however, not the country. It's not as simple as just going through anything that links to 'Micronesia' and changing it to the Federated States of Micronesia. NULL talk

Main Religion(s) Table Unclear

The table in Micronesia#Politics that states religion is a bit unclear; at one point it states "Roman Catholic, Buddhism 10.6%". Is this supposed to be referring to both combined equal 10.6% or are we just lacking something there?

Wake Island paragraph in Geography section.

Regardless of political status, shouldn't Wake Island be treated as part of Marshall Islands in the geography section? C933103 (talk) 11:18, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Map vs. Text, re: Nauru

The text includes Nauru as part of Micronesia. The map seems to exclude Nauru.

Is this something that should be changed?
