Taras Hill
Chernecha Hora (Template:Lang-uk), (literally, Monk's Hill) - a mount by the Dnieper river near Kaniv in Ukraine, where the remains of the famous Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko are buried since 1861.[1]
Chernecha hora is considered to be a historical, natural and cultural monument of All-Ukrainian importance and national relic of Ukraine.[2]
In the past, the mount was a part of the ancient Kaniv Orthodox Monastery, where many hetmans of Ukrainian Cossacks had been buried.[2]
In 1978, the hill was the site where Oleksa Hirnyk burned himself to death in protest of Soviet suppression of the Ukrainian language, culture and history[3].
At present, the mount belongs to the Shevchenko National Preserve[4] dedicated to the poet and is a place of mass visits from all over the country and abroad. A Church in memory of Taras Shevchenko (Tarasova Cerkva) is designated to be built here.[5][6]
