  • Comment: First off, I'll emphasise this is a great topic for an article, and one we certainly should have. However, given this is a living person and a controversial issue, we should take great care that all material is properly presented and footnoted. Right now some of the language supporting his advocacy is too flowery or vague (who defines "countless", for example?) so needs to be more precise and neutral. Also, you prevent a selection of links but have not actually WP:Footnoted any of them to the text. Every claim or quote in the main body should be sourced to a WP:Reliable source to protect the subject from libel or misleading information. Some of the articles appear to clearly belong to one paragraph or another, so I've moved one footnote about the sculpture to the proper area as an example of how to code footnotes. Please make the needed adjustments, and good call on finding a subject we should have had an article on a while ago.

Thomas Beatie (born Tracy Lagondino, 1974) is a United States advocate for transgender and sexuality issues. Beatie, a trans man, became known as The Pregnant Man after he became pregnant through a sperm donor in 2008. He has borne three children. He chose to become pregnant because his wife Nancy was infertile, doing so with cryogenic donated sperm and a syringe, at home. He wrote an article about the experience in The Advocate.[1] The Washington Post further broadened the story in March 2008 when blogger Emil Steiner called Beatie the first "legally" pregnant man on record,[2] in reference to certain states' and federal legal recognition of Beatie as a man.[3][1] In 2010, Guinness World Records recognized Beatie as the world's "First Married Man to Give Birth."[4] Beatie gave birth to a girl named Susan Juliette Beatie on June 29, 2008.[5][6] Barbara Walters announced Beatie's second pregnancy on The View,[7] and Beatie gave birth to a boy named Austin Alexander Beatie on June 9, 2009.[8] Beatie gave birth to his third child, a boy named Jensen James Beatie, on July 25, 2010.[9] Beatie has since had a phalloplasty to create an artificial penis and is also considering a hysterectomy.[10]

Life and career

A champion of human rights and cultural diversity, Thomas wants to help foster the change required for transgender people to receive full social, medical, political, and legal equality. News of Thomas' pregnancy sparked a worldwide media frenzy across multiple platforms. He appeared in interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters, and Larry King, and has appeared regularly on popular venues like Good Morning America, The View, and repeat appearances on The Doctors and Dr. Drew.[11]

Thomas was the topic of many media and pop culture outlets, including repeated coverage in People Magazine. He was photographed by photographer Mary Ellen Mark. In the United States, the story was sensationalized on David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, and South Park. Thomas’ first pregnancy became a large and far-reaching transgender news story.

A former female model, bodybuilder, and black belt, Thomas is a fitness enthusiast and has recently returned to his zeal for martial arts. He was named a mens' Taekwondo full-contact tournament champion.[11][12]

In February of 2012, Thomas elected to have "lower surgery" to further modify his body. His surgery was performed by transgender surgeon, Dr. Marci Bowers.[13] Thomas had concerns after his surgery, but his doctor appeared with him on The Doctors (2008 TV series) and assured him that the issue could be corrected and he would make a full recovery.[14]

As of October 2012, Thomas and his wife, Nancy, are going through a divorce. The process has been halted since the state of Arizona is challenging the validity of Thomas' marriage to Nancy and his legal male gender identity. Thomas currently has temporary sole custody of his three children and is paying alimony to Nancy. The trial is set for December 7, 2012.[15]

Influences

The exclusive documentary, Pregnant Man, released in November of 2008, documented the final weeks of his pregnancy and the birth of Susan. Shortly after Susan was born, Thomas authored his first book, Labor of Love: The Story of One Man’s Extraordinary Pregnancy (published in October, 2008). In Labor of Love, the Pregnant Man, Beatie gives insight into the battle he fought for his right to have a child.[16]

In May of 2010, London sculptor Marc Quinn presented a 10-foot marble statue of Thomas when he was pregnant with daughter, Susan.[17]
