A social media algorithm is a computer algorithm that determines what order social media content is displayed in, and whether content is displayed at all. There have been allegations that social media algorithms are intentionally designed to be addicting,[1] and that they are unintentionally biased towards various groups.[2][3][4]
Social media algorithms are usually closed-source, as they are considered trade secrets that confer a competitive advantage. They may also be used to battle spam and other unwanted content, in a sort of arms race that would make social media's job harder if they were open source.
