Hi, I noticed you've reverted my change. The idea behind my change was to try to reduce the length of the infobox, whilst still keeping all relevant info. This method works well in articles where a ship has a number of names / owners (TS Leda, SS Elisabethville etc). The separate sections as currently used are more suited to naval vessels, not merchantmen.

My main use of the ship template has been for Clyde ferries. I feel that they have a distinct career in their original ownership and a separate one once they have been sold off. If there is consensus within WP:SHIPS, I am happy to go with that. Finavon (talk) 11:21, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
By all means ask at WT:SHIPS, I'm fairly sure they'll agree that in these cases compact infoboxes are better. Mjroots (talk) 11:56, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dunglass

Any chance of 2nd opinion on the area of Dunglass Island? Ben MacDui 19:05, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just 40ha on OS 1:50k. Finavon (talk) 11:51, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK - thanks again. I must review my system as it seems to be exaggerating areas. I did find a source meantime that talks of a "farm of about 100 acres" as well, although it is a passing reference rather than a measurement. Ben MacDui 14:28, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I saw a similar quote, but it was not clear if it included farmland off the island. An OS grid square is 100 ha. Finavon (talk) 15:32, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Avoiding redirects

Why are you editing with summaries "avoid redir"? That isn't, in itself, a legitimate reason for editing. See WP:Redirect#Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken. Redirects are there to be used; sometimes they are intentionally used rather than a direct link. But what's even stranger, in this case you actually created one new redirect that wasn't a redirect in the original. Gene Nygaard (talk) 23:15, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A mistaken belief that it improved clarity and performance. Thanks for pointing out WP:R2D. I trust you have no objection to the reintroduction of a link and ship name formatting. I cannot see the redirect link(s) you suggest I introduced - I left [[Rear-Admiral]] and [[Vice-Admiral]] alone. Finavon (talk) 06:12, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't any big problem; a battle that had a year in its article name, even though it apparently didn't have to because the link after you took out the year redirects to the same place. Some people use templates to get the ship name formatting; the result with them isn't any different from what you put in without the template, is it? I didn't examine those changes that closely. In any case, there might be better reason for replacing a template with the links and italics put in directly in a way that's visible on the edit page. It's still okay to tweak redirects along the way as you are doing something else, too. I'll do it for the singular/plural versions, for example, where you just need to move an s outside the brackets. But leave them as is in most cases where it is something dealing with national varieties of English, if it is something where the redirect might be changed to its own article at some time, or the redirect might either now or in the future include a specific section of the article to which it redirects. Note that one other factor involved here is the ability to go from an article back through "what links here" to the articles linking to it, and sometimes we are only interested in the ones using particular redirects to get there.
The main reason why I brought it up is that these changes can be hard to follow if you look at the differences for the edits, and it takes a while to figure out that your edits aren't really doing anything. Or that they are, but all that was mentioned in the edit summary was the change of redirects. I went through a brief spell where I was trying to "fix" more of them than I should have, too. Gene Nygaard (talk) 13:52, 19 March 2010 (UTC) Gene Nygaard (talk) 13:52, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Really. I think I put the date in and you took in out! I agree with your general comments and will be more selective in piping links and try to use more informative summaries. The advantage of {{ship}} is that it gets formatting right, which manual italics often fails to do. Finavon (talk) 22:03, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stop crop my pictures.

Are you cropping my pictures with a bot? Can you stop this and revert the damage? Thank You.

The images were in Commons:Category:Images_with_borders and I was following instructions at Commons:Commons:Media_for_cleanup. I agree with the editor who marked them - they are more useful across projects without fuzzy edges. The best version would be the original before you applied the mask. Do you have a particular use for them with the fuzzy edge? Finavon (talk) 14:24, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Let me introduce myself. Most likely, I own the biggest collection of pictures of megalithic / stone age / bronze age sites in Northern Germany.
You can proof this at www.megalithic.co.uk, the biggest database of such sites and pictures on the internet. I have contributed some 2500 illustrations/ pictures there. All these pictures are hand picked / sized / cropped ready for publishing on the net. Some 30% of this collection have the slight fuzzy edge applied. So, I won't go back and re-edit all this pictures. I have read the"instructions at Commons:Commons:Media_for_cleanup". These seem to apply to pictures with colored frames, so I think it doesn't necessarily apply to my thin ( 25-20pixel) edges.
There is a big lack of this kind of illustrations on the german Wikipedia, and I decided to contribute. This is a lot of work already, and I realy don't want to re-edit all the pictures, nor do I want anybody to alter my content.

Thanks for your contributions. I hope the community finds them useful. I will not crop more of these images, although I see that Commons:User:Ies has already marked another 20 with {{Remove border}}. Finavon (talk) 16:44, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, would you be so kind as to give us support!

Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. I've just read your profile and saw that you're an enthusiastic Scotsman (I went to Edinburgh not that long ago and I really appreciated the people and the wonderful place! Beautiful and really nice!), so I guess that being Scottish helps you understand what are a minorized language and culture and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to that moment. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT. Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to minorized languages and cultures in the future! Thanks again, wishing you a great summer, take care! Keep on preserving your great culture, country and language! Mar sin leibh! Capsot (talk) 07:57, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:55, 15 June 2010 (UTC) [reply]

Sarah's

I notice the creator of the page has an attachment to the article. Perhaps it is doing no harm, but I am tempted to prod it - the only evidence of the island's name is a fashion shoot with the name in quotes. Ben MacDui 07:29, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As previously agreed, I think Camas Uig is notable and Sarah's Island is not. Only one article is necessary. Finavon (talk) 08:09, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
