North Isles

The article should be somewhat improved. --MacRusgail (talk) 18:35, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you say. However I still have my doubts that North Isles will ever make a great article. It is more like Extreme_points_of_the_United_Kingdom than most of the project pages. I like the regional templates, which save the need for repeated "the other islands in the group are..." I think there is some way to have nested pages, so eg a group article could contain the articles for individual islands. No time to investigate now. Finavon (talk) 19:47, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree in that the North Isles are probably the most important subdivision of Shetland, as they contain three very important islands in terms of size and population (well, two of the most important, plus slightly less important Fetlar), as well as various extreme points, which are scattered between Unst, Oosta and Muckle Flugga.
A few of the forms of Orkneyinga Saga names are here - Wikipedia:WikiProject Scottish Islands/Orkneyinga Saga. South Havra is listed here. Papa will probably have the same form as Papa Stour - Papey. I'm very sceptical about some of H-S's Norse spelling... --MacRusgail (talk) 13:09, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If the individual islands are important, then they deserve a good article. I'm quite happy to accept to criticism of H-S. However as a widely available source, we need more authoritative sources where we are going to ignore his statements. Finavon (talk) 19:06, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Hey Finavon, thanks for cleaning up these images. Feel free to change the userpage links if you need to! Dinoguy2 (talk) 16:56, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Commons images

Thanks so much for cropping so many images -- they look fantastic once they've been cropped. Thank you for letting me know about the cahe problem -- I was particularly concerned about Image:Yonge Street looking north from Front Street.jpg, which appeared to have been replaced with Image:Yonge Street north of Queen Street by Micklethwaite.jpg - I thought maybe I'd uploaded the same image twice in error, but now it is right again. Anyway, thanks for the hard work. Skeezix1000 (talk) 23:32, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, I did upload the wrong cropped image there. Sorry. I will upload the correct cropped image. Finavon (talk) 23:42, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, excuse my ignorance about images on wikipedia, however you have added an image I uploaded Image:Bispham Rock Gardens01.jpg to this category, Category:Images with the same name on Wikimedia Commons as of 24 March 2008 which states that the image will be deleted once the category is seven days old. I have no idea what to do about this or what the implications are for the image? Or why there is a duplicate on wiki common? Do I need to do something to ensure the image remains in the Bispham Rock Gardens article? Thank you and excuse my lack of knowledge on this topic. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 01:12, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I transfered your image to Commons, where it remains credited to you, with the same license. The Wikimedia Commons (or WikiCommons) is a repository of multimedia files. Files uploaded there can be used like locally uploaded files on all other projects on the Wikimedia servers, in all languages. All content is either in the public domain or released under free licenses such as the GNU Free Documentation License. (see Wikimedia Commons) As I am not an administrator, I cannot delete the local en copy, so marked it as {{subst:ncd}} ("now commons") for an admin to review. Once deleted, any link to it will see the Commons file. You need do nothing for your image to continue to be available. I hope this helps. Finavon (talk) 01:41, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a cropped and scanned image from my Bar Mitzvah. It's mine and I release it into Public Domain. I've no idea what problem someone had with it. - Sparky (talk) 05:29, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(discussion continued at User talk:Sparky)

Where would I indicate it is a family image? - Sparky (talk) 15:53, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What was the hurry? I'll have to scan it again. What was forcing you to do this? - Sparky (talk) 04:10, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Braemar

Can you look at the most recent edit of Braemar for me? On the surface it appears gratuitous. A user has removed one of my images showing Auchendryne Lodge in Braemar and replaced it with one of his own showing a sunset 'near' Braemar. Personally I don't think landscapes 'near' somewhere should be included in a article about that somewhere, but that's another issue.

Anyway - he appears to be claiming a WP policy for deleting my image saying it shows a B&B - I really don't think Auchendryne Lodge is a B&B (there are no signs outside), but I don't really know that it isn't nor whether there is a policy that covers removing such images from a page like this.

Please let me know (here) what you think - thanks WikiWriter (talk) 06:13, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see a problem with your picture and have restored it. The image showing a sunset in the area is also fine for now. As the article grows, images should illustrate aspects of the article, but general "scene-setting" images would be better in the Commons category, which is linked. Finavon (talk) 17:00, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks - I agree with everything you say - Question though - is there a policy prohibiting images of 'B&Bs' (and such like) as user RonAlmog appears to be implying? I am curious about his point. WikiWriter (talk) 19:55, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm no expert on policy. Both en:wiki and Commons dis-allow advertising, but I cannot see that an image of a business premises, in context, would be a problem in an article on the area. Commons have a category:Advertising. In this case there is nothing in the picture indicating the business. (in fact I wonder if there is confusion with Auchendryne Cottage!). You could try asking RonAlmog what policy he is quoting. Finavon (talk) 07:44, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the advice - I did ask. The response (in - I suspect - an intentionally provocative tone) cites no policy apparently - removal was in 'improvement' - user avoided answering the hotel issue too. So I'll leave it there WikiWriter (talk) 13:37, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assessments

Good to see you popping up at WPSI assessments. If you have a mo, could you take a look at the other two still needing attention i.e. Timeline of prehistoric Scotland (arguably of too wide a scope) and Skerryvore. As the main author of both I don't think I can offer an assessment once an article gets beyond 'Start' class and they have been sitting there for some time. I am not attached to the result, I'd just like to get them off the list. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 12:48, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your helpful edits during the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition GA review, which has now ended (thank God!). You may have noticed that I am working on the Bruce biography, which was abandoned by a previous editor. I'd much appreciate it if, from time to time, you would look at the progress and tweak it into better shape. Brianboulton (talk) 23:02, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Whitecapsfclogo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Whitecapsfclogo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 07:28, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It appears to have been superceded by Image:VancouverWhitecapsLogo.GIF so is no longer required. Feel free to delete. My only involvement was to crop the border. Finavon (talk) 18:42, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could I get back my border?

Yesterday I uploaded the following image on Commons: Image:Gujoh2.JPG
Due to a better appearance of my userpage, before uploading I added a red border to the image. Thereon you (the cropbot) removed this border - for sure with good intention. I wanted to know if you/I could readd the border to the image as it was before, or if there are any rules which forbid to do so. Thanks for your understanding!
Greetings, Gujoh —Preceding unsigned comment added by Faispartie (talkcontribs) 08:50, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to revert to your version of the image (in File history). I suspect there may be no other use of the image. You can add a border in the article, but I don't know how to make it red. Try
180px

All right. Thanks! --Faispartie (talk) 07:30, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tuscaloosa Public Library Image

I work at the library and maintain the wiki entry. The boss gave me permission to upload it. I have changed it to TPL. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.179.8.57 (talk) 00:34, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Orkney Rocks

Thanks for your attention to the assessments. I noticed your edit summary for Prehistoric Orkney - and yes its a potential GAN. Cheers, Ben MacDui 11:19, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ye Tarberts and Braes

Thanks for your input re the Battle of the Braes, which was good to see - I have now added it as a redirect, although it could emerge as an article in its own right. On the other hand it is very naughty to start up the Tarbert discussion and then scuttle off for a break. We may end up with half a dozen dab pages if we are not careful! Have a good one :-) 20:42, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes an intersting bit of history. I'm here for a few days yet and not away for long - just taking it a bit easier on Commons. I might even be in en.wiki more than recently! I favour a single dab page, Tarbert (like Oronsay), with the non-article pages including Tarbet redirecting to it. The article pages (including the 4 Lochs) can have a {{For}} or {{otherplaces}} line. I'm inclined to remove the examples from Tarbert (placename), instead linking to the dab page for them. I'll see where the discussion has reached tomorrow and propose along these lines. Finavon (talk) 22:41, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bear in mind that Oronsay (like Eilean Garbh) is in breach of MOSDAB. They only like red or blue links and no general descriptions. Maybe we could come up with some clever new description for a page that isn't a dab, but isn't a list either. I'll look into this. Ben MacDui 17:03, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, sorry about that. I thought the talk pages contained actual discussions or something; I wasn't aware of the move templates. I'll keep an eye on it next time. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 12:53, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Achnaluachrach, and Achnaluacharch

Re your question. I really don't know. I driven past Roybridge a few times in the last couple of months on the way to Wolf Trax, and there is a few houses a couple of miles down the road, but they might be single dwelling places, not in any particular village, but I couldn't say for definate. Go ahead and change them if you think the article needs changed. At the speed i'm going, its going to be after Christmas before this list is done, and more contribs the better. ;8-) scope_creep (talk) 18:35, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I found out what makes a place a village. Osmaps tells you. So i've deleted the above link, and about dozen others in the A's, and went through the list to see what others are false. I think roughly 20 odd places have been removed. I just hope the rest of the list is checked as well scope_creep (talk) 17:00, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

North Sea

Hello there. I see that you have been active on the North Sea article. I helped out a while back when the article was at the ACID stage. Now I was again puttering at getting the dead link, citations and references in ship shape...as you can see by the lo-o-ng note on my talk page. There are a few other things I noted that I want to also putter at to help the article at GA nominations. I will stop editing till I hear from you. Sorry about the edit conflict, it never popped up here at all. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 17:30, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can I pop back in and fix the other dead links? How are you doing on your editing? SriMesh | talk 19:50, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have a ref for the latest addition, then done for now. Good luck with the GA home straight. Finavon (talk) 19:53, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you...for the time today. I think the article should get GA as it is so much better, and should even march straight to FA fairly well. I left my progress notes on the talk page.SriMesh | talk 22:57, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contributions to the North Sea article. I have re-written some sections so that they can have sources, references and citations for every fact. Can you be a second set of eyes, and see if every number, year, new piece of info has a citation please. If you see a copy edit that needs being done, could you also help the article in the midst of the GA review. The GA review is currently studying the verifiablity of the article and if it is properly referenced with verifiable sources for facts. Kind Regards and thank you.SriMesh | talk 00:03, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
